AMES, Iowa ? Iowa State's rally fell short as the Cyclones fell to eighth-ranked Oklahoma, 5-3, Saturday afternoon at the Southwest Athletic Complex.
The Sooners (36-11, 9-2 Big 12) led 3-0 after two innings and added to that lead with two more in the top of the sixth before holding off the Cyclones (26-20, 3-7).
In the second, OU put three on the board after three hits. Samantha Ricketts reached on an infield hit to shortstop that was speared by a diving Carrie Monroe, who got to her feet but was unable to retire Ricketts. ISU starter Rachel Zabriskie then issued a free pass to Lindsey Vandever and Savannah Long advanced Ricketts and Vandever with a sac bunt. Wendy Trott then dropped a bloop single into center to score Ricketts for the games' first run.
Jessica Legendre followed with a well executed squeeze play that scored Vandever. A bases loaded walk to Oklahoma's leading hitter Amber Flores increased the Sooners' lead to 3-0.
The score remained the same until the fifth when Susan Ogden doubled to right center to plate Krystle Huey, who pinch ran for Chana'e Jones after she singled with one out. Another run came across on a two-out error by Amanda Bradberry, who rushed trying to retire Vandever on an infield single.
The Cyclones made things interesting in the bottom of the fifth, scoring three runs with two-outs. After OU pitcher D.J. Mathis retired Bradberry and Alex Johnson, Sydni Jones collected her second hit of the ball game on a single to centerfield. Mathis then plunked Carrie Monroe before striking out pinch hitter Jacquelyn Beatty for what appeared to be the final out. On the third strike, however, Mathis' pitch got in the dirt and away from Vandever, allowing Beatty to reach and giving the Cyclones a fourth out in the inning.
The Cyclones took advantage of it as Kristy Olsen promptly dropped a single to left field that scored pinch runner Carleigh Berry. Kelsey Kidwell then knocked a single through the right side to score Monroe and Beatty and make it 5-3. On the play though, Olsen was caught rounding third and Vandever threw from her catcher position to tag out Olsen for the final out.
Mathis (23-5) kept the Cyclones off the bases in the sixth and seventh to halt the Sooners' two-game losing streak. Mathis finished with nine strikeouts on the day while allowing five hits and three runs.
Zabriskie (12-9) took the loss for the Cyclones, lasting just 1.1 innings and giving up three runs on three hits. Charissa Carlin was solid in relief, keeping the Cyclones in the game while allowing two runs on four hits in 5.2 innings of work.
Kidwell and Jones collected a pair of hits for the Cyclones. Kidwell equaled a career-high with two RBI while Olsen drove in the Cyclones other run for her second RBI of the season.
The Cyclones and Sooners will meet again Sunday at 11 a.m. The Cyclones will celebrate Senior Day, acknowledging the contributions of Ariel Coburn, Amie Ford and Kristy Olsen prior to the game.
