AMES, Iowa ? Iowa State out hit eighth-ranked Oklahoma but left eight runners on base as they fell 9-1 to the Sooners Sunday at the Southwest Athletic Complex.
The Sooners (37-11, 10-2 Big 12) scored in each of the first three innings and tacked on four more in the seventh to break open the game.
ISU (26-21, 3-8) had eight hits to the Sooners' seven but fell for the first time this season when out hitting an opponent. The Cyclones are now 20-1 on the year when posting more hits than their opponent.
OU got on the board in the first on Susan Ogden's 10th homer of the season, a two-run shot to left field off of ISU starter Amie Ford.
After the Sooners added another run in the second on a single by Amber Flores, the Cyclones lit up the scoreboard on Alex Johnson's fourth homer of the season, a solo shot to left field. The next batter, Sydni Jones, appeared to have went back-to-back with Johnson but her shot to left center bounced off the top of the fence and back into play for a double.
Oklahoma would add two more in the third on Savannah Long's two-run homer to run the score to 5-1.
The sides would remain scoreless until the seventh as OU starter Lauren Eckermann and ISU reliever Rachel Zabriskie kept their opponents off the board. Zabriskie didn't allow a hit until the seventh while ISU had numerous opportunities with runners on base, leaving seven on base over the final five frames.
The Sooners padded their lead with a four-run fourth that was highlighted by Lindsey Vandever's three-run triple to centerfield that was just out of the reach of a diving Kelsey Kidwell.
Eckermann (11-4) got the win, going 4.1 innings and allowing one run on five hits. Jadyn Smith tossed 2.2 innings of scoreless ball in relief.
Ford (4-5) took the loss for the Cyclones, allowing five runs on four hits.
Jones led ISU with a pair of hits while six other Cyclones collected a hit apiece in the losing effort.
Vandever and Long each collected a pair of hits and drove in three runs each to pace the Sooners.
The Cyclones will be back in action Wednesday as they play host to Missouri in a doubleheader. First pitch is slated for 2 p.m.
