Big First Inning Lifts Texas Tech Past Cyclones

LUBBOCK, Texas ? Texas Tech scored five runs in the first inning and went on to defeat Iowa State, 6-1, in Big 12 action on Saturday at Rocky Johnson Field.

For the fourth straight game, ISU (26-24, 3-11 Big 12) put itself in an early hole by giving up five runs to the Red Raiders (19-33, 6-9) in the first inning.

Leah Legler led off the bottom of the first inning with an infield single off Cyclone pitcher Charissa Carlin. After Carlin got Devin Zaragoza to fly out, Montana Patin belted a two-run homer to centerfield to open the scoring. Jennifer Corkin followed with a single to center and came in to score on Jennifer Bowers' triple that made it 3-0.

After Rachel Zabriskie relieved Carlin and got catcher Robyn Wike to pop out, Megan Shupp walked and Elizabeth Eimen reached on catcher's interference to load the bases. Whitney Riley then beat out an infield single that scored Bowers and Shupp to round out the scoring and make it 5-0 at the end of the first.

With a big deficit ahead of them, the Cyclones struggled to get anything going at the plate as Texas Tech starter Ashly Jacobs shut ISU down until the sixth inning when Sydni Jones hit her seventh homer of the game to break up the shutout.

Sarah Losleben entered the game in the seventh for Texas Tech and retired the Cyclones in order to secure the win.

Jones finished 1-for-3 and drove in her 23rd run of the season. Her sixth inning shot was ISU's 30th of the season. Courtney Wray was one of four other Cyclones to collect a hit in the game. The sophomore's second inning single was the 100th hit of her career.

Patin led the Red Raiders at the plate, going 2-for-3 with three RBI while Whitney Riley went 1-for-3 with two runs driven in.

Carlin (10-9) took the loss for the Cyclones, going just a third of an inning and allowing four runs on four hits.

Jacobs (9-14) got the win for Texas Tech, allowing just one run on five hits in six innings.

The Cyclones and Red Raiders will meet again Sunday at noon.
