LUBBOCK, Texas ? Texas Tech scored two runs in the bottom of the 10th inning to defeat Iowa State, 4-3, on Sunday afternoon at Rocky Johnson Field.
After Iowa State (26-25, 3-12 Big 12) scored a run in the top of the 10th, Texas Tech (20-33, 7-9) put two on the board to hand the Cyclones their sixth-straight loss.
The teams were scoreless until the fifth inning when Sydni Jones doubled for the Cyclones and came around to score on Carrie Monroe's single.
Iowa State held the 1-0 edge until Whitney Riley broke up Rachel Zabriskie's shutout by belting a homer with two outs in the bottom of the seventh inning. The homer was Riley's first of the season and sent the game into extra innings.
ISU quickly grabbed the lead back on Courtney Wray's fourth homer of the season, a leadoff shot in the eighth inning off Red Raider starter Tye Coats to give the Cyclones the 2-1 edge.
The Red Raiders used more two-out magic, this time on a wild pitch that scored Devin Zaragoza, to force a ninth inning.
After a scoreless ninth inning, the international tie breaker was applied for the 10th frame, allowing both teams to start the inning with a runner on second base.
The Cyclones got a run in their half of the inning as Jones came in to score on a single by Amanda Bradberry to make it 3-2. That was all ISU could get across as it went to the bottom of the 10th.
After Zabriskie got the first out, Montana Patin doubled to score Leah Legler and tie it at 3-3. Lauren Preston, who was forced into action after pinch running for Jennifer Corkin in the eighth, then singled and Patin came across on a miscue by the Cyclones to end the game.
Zabriskie (12-11) took the loss for the Cyclones, allowing four runs while going the distance.
Sarah Losleben (3-3) got the win for Texas Tech in relief.
Texas Tech out hit the Cyclones 13 to six in the game.
The Cyclones will return to action Tuesday when they head to Nebraska for a Big 12 showdown with the Huskers. First pitch is slated for 4 p.m.
