LINCOLN, Neb. ? Nebraska scored six runs in the fourth inning and held on to defeat Iowa State, 6-4, in Big 12 action on Tuesday afternoon at Bowlin Stadium.
Iowa State (26-26, 3-13 Big 12) took a quick lead but was unable to get out of the fourth inning as it allowed six runs and eventually fell to the Huskers (20-25, 2-12).
The Cyclones got on the board in the third on Ariel Coburn's team-leading ninth homer of the season. The two-run shot came with one out off of Nebraska starter Alex Hupp and scored Kelsey Kidwell, who singled to lead off the inning for her second hit of the ballgame, making it 2-0 Iowa State.
The second inning scoring was ISU's first at Bowlin Stadium in over 30 innings and also broke the 20-year old school record for single-season runs batted in. After today's game, the Cyclones have driven in 168 runs on the season.
The Huskers would get back in it with a rally in the fourth, sending 11 to the plate and scoring six runs to go on top 6-2. The inning was capped by a three-run homer off the bat of Crystal Carwile that came against Cyclone reliever Charissa Carlin.
The Cyclones rallied for two runs in the seventh on a single by Courtney Wray, but were retired with the tying run at the plate. For the game, ISU left 10 runners on base.
Kidwell led the Cyclones at the plate, going 3-for-4 and stealing two bases. Kidwell now has 16 stolen bases on the season, just two shy of tying the school record.
Coburn and Wray each drove in a pair of runs in the game for ISU, which lost its seventh straight. Alex Johnson also had two hits in the contest.
Meghan Mullin was 3-for-4 to pace the Huskers. Carwile finished with a game-high three RBI on her 10th homer of the season.
Rachel Zabriskie (12-12) took the loss for the Cyclones, lasting just three innings and giving up three runs.
Molly Hill (10-14) got the win for Nebraska in relief. Hill allowed six hits but just two runs to pick up her first Big 12 win of the season.
Iowa State will face South Dakota State in doubleheader action on Wednesday in Brookings, S.D. First pitch for the twin bill is set for 3 p.m.
