BROOKINGS, S.D.?The Iowa State soccer team opened up the Jackrabbit Invitational with a convincing, 4-1, triumph over North Dakota State Friday, elevating the Cyclones to a 3-2 season record.
Senior midfielder Leslie Hill poured in a career-high five points in the match (two goals and an assist) while junior midfielders Casey Bothwell and Lauren Odino found the back of the net for ISU.

“Leslie played well and was a real offensive threat,” head coach Wendy Dillinger said. “When she scored the third goal, it really put the game away.”
The Cyclones opened the scoring 19:08 into the contest when Odino put away a rebound off Hill's shot that hit the crossbar. Iowa State took its 1-0 lead into the intermission and held a 10-5 shot advantage over the Bison (3-3).
Bothwell, making her first start of the season, extended the Cyclone lead 15:49 into the second half with Odino and sophomore midfielder Jordan Bishop registering assists on the goal. Hill soon found the back of the net twice in under a minute with tallies at the 72:45 and 73:44 marks. Freshman defender Mary Kate McLaughlin assisted on Hill's first score, while Bishop notched another assist on Hill's final goal. South Dakota State pulled back a goal in the 78th minute, but ISU did not concede again the remainder of the affair.
“Emily (Hejlik) and (Lauren) Fader, in the back, were solid the whole game,” Dillinger said. “They did a great job of shutting down (North Dakota State's) attack.”
Junior goalkeeper Ann Gleason recorded four saves. Sophomore Ashley Costanzo notched her first action of the season for ISU in the net, playing the final 13:32.
Iowa State saw the collegiate debuts of a pair of freshmen (Amanda Cacciatore and Shannon Stemm) in the match.
ISU had a 25-11 shot advantage over NDSU while each side had four corners. With the win, the Cyclones have their third consecutive victory. Dillinger feels the results echo the team's progress.
“We are improving, especially in the attack,” she said. “We are more confident and keeping the ball better. Our attack is more organized and purposeful.”
The Cyclones make their way back to the pitch Sunday for a 1 p.m. showdown against host South Dakota State (2-2). The Jackrabbits started their first game of the invitational at 7 p.m. against Eastern Washington Friday.
