Late Overtime Goal Drops ISU, 2-1

BROOKINGS, S.D.?A South Dakota State goal just over two minutes into the second overtime frame let the Jackrabbits get past the Iowa State soccer team, 2-1, Sunday in the Jackrabbit Invitational.

After a scoreless first half that saw Iowa State (3-3) outshoot its opponent 6-3, Amanda Nimtz continued her recent goal-scoring form. The junior midfielder recorded her third goal in as many matches, 1:36 into the second frame.

South Dakota State (3-3) responded 13 minutes later when Erin Kasmarik scored the equalizer. The Jackrabbits continued to put on the pressure in the second half, holding a 12-5 shot advantage.

The score line remained knotted up at one at the end of regulation. After a scoreless first overtime period, Kelsey Ferguson's goal in the 107^th minute gave the Jackrabbits the win.

“South Dakota State was a good, athletic team that was good at what they do,” said head coach Wendy Dillinger. “They outplayed and outworked us, especially in the second half and overtime. We have to be able to deal with teams like that to compete in the Big 12.”

Junior Ann Gleason had a season-high eight saves in the match. Nimtz and senior midfielder Leslie Hill led the Cyclones with three shots each.

Dillinger was particularly frustrated with the Cyclones' inability to capitalize on a pair of breakaways.

“We have to be able to put those away,” she said. “We can't give away gifts like that, and we did twice today.”

The Cyclones make their home debut Friday when Drake comes to the Iowa State Soccer Complex for a 7 p.m. matchup. The Bulldogs are 1-4 but are coming off a 3-1 win over Portland State Sunday. ISU plays Iowa Sunday at 1 p.m. in Ames as well.

“It will be nice to be at home,” Dillinger said. “We are looking forward to playing two instate rivals at home before Big 12 Conference play.”
