CARBONDALE, Ill. - Rachel Zabriskie allowed just one run on four hits as Iowa State held off Southern Illinois Thursday afternoon at Charlotte West Stadium. The Cyclones improve to 15-12 with the win.
Dalyn Varela got the scoring started for the Cyclones in the second inning, singling to drive in Sydni Jones, who doubled with one out. Kelsey Kidwell then hit a sacrifice fly to score Amanda Bradberry and make it 2-0 in favor of ISU.
Southern Illinois (16-10) cut into the lead with a run in the fourth.
Katie Wilson hit a sacrifice fly that scored Alicia Garza, who had doubled off Zabriskie to lead off the inning.
Zabriskie (14-6) retired the Salukis without incident in the final three innings to pick up her 47th career win. The junior, who needs just two wins to tie the career mark for victories, had eight strikeouts in the game.
The Cyclones had five hits in the game, including one from Jones, who ran her hitting streak to three games. Bradberry, Carleigh Berry and Kelsey Kidwell each had hits in addition to Varela and Jones.
Brittney Lang (2-1) suffered her first loss of the season for Southern Illinois, giving up two runs on four hits in three innings of work.
The Cyclones will return to action Friday at 4 p.m. against Saint Louis.
