Cyclones Fall To Baylor, 4-1

WACO, Texas - Baylor erased a one-run Iowa State lead with a four-run fifth inning to defeat the Cyclones, 4-1, Sunday afternoon in Big 12 play at Getterman Stadium. With the loss, Iowa State falls to 25-23 overall and 3-9 in Big 12 play.

For the second-straight day, ISU got on the board first with a run in the second inning. Heidi Kidwell hit a sacrifice fly that scored Courtney Wray, who hit her 32nd career double to lead off the inning.

ISU starter Lauren Kennewell got out of a jam in the bottom of the third inning as Baylor loaded the bases with one out. Wray made a great play on a grounder by Jordan Vannatta and threw out the speedy Tiffany Wesley at home for the second out before Kennewell got Courtney Nieten to fly out to Heidi Kidwell in right for the final out, maintaining the one-run lead for the Cyclones.

The Lady Bears (26-19, 6-8) finally got to Kennewell in the fifth with four runs. Vannatta delivered a two-run single with two outs and Nieten followed with a two-run homer as Baylor went on top 4-1.

The Cyclones threatened in the sixth inning with Carleigh Berry and Kelsey Kidwell leading off the inning with singles, but Baylor pitcher Courtney Repka was able to retire the next three hitters to stop the inning.

Repka (18-13) picked up the win for the second day in a row, allowing just one run on six hits.

Kennewell (1-4) suffered the loss for the Cyclones, giving up four runs on six hits while striking out two. Tori Torrescano relieved Kennewell with two outs in the fifth and didn't allow a hit.

Wray led the Cyclones at the plate going 2-for-3, her 12th multi-hit game of the season.

Iowa State plays a doubleheader Wednesday against Big 12 foe Missouri. First pitch from the Southwest Athletic Complex is scheduled for 2 p.m.
