LAWRENCE, Kan. - Alex Jones scattered three Iowa State hits as the Cyclones fell to Kansas, 3-0, Saturday afternoon in the first game of a Big 12 doubleheader at Arrocha Ballpark. With the loss, Iowa State falls to 25-28 overall and 3-14 in Big 12 play.
Jones (7-9) kept the Cyclones off the board, allowing just three hits and three walks, while striking out two to pick up the win.
The Jayhawks opened the scoring in the bottom of the second, taking advantage of a dropped fly ball by Heidi Kidwell that put Brittany Hile on third to leadoff the inning. Hile came in to score on a sacrifice fly by the next batter, Marissa Ingle, to make it 1-0.
The Cyclones squandered an opportunity in the top of the third, loading the bases with two outs before Jones struck out Courtney Wray to end the inning.
KU recorded its first hit of the game in the bottom of the fifth and ended up with three total to score a run. Kelsey Alsdorf had a pinch hit single to score Ingle, who led off the inning with a single of her own up the middle.
Ingle came through again in the bottom of the sixth with an RBI double to give Kansas a 3-0 lead. Ingle's hit plated Rosie Hull, who reached on a leadoff single.
Heidi Kidwell hit a triple for her 60th hit of the season, becoming just the fourth player in school history to reach the 60-hit plateau. Kelsey Kidwell and Carrie Monroe had the only other hits for the Cyclones.
The Jayhawks (21-33, 2-15) were led by Ingle and Allie Clark, who had two hits each in the contest.
Rachel Zabriskie (20-17) suffered the loss for ISU, tossing a complete game and giving up three runs on six hits. Zabriskie struck out six in the loss.
Game two between the Cyclones and Jayhawks will begin at approximately 2:25 p.m.
