AMES, Iowa—The Iowa State soccer team could not overcome Iowa's four-goal scoring output Friday evening at the ISU Soccer Complex, as the Cyclones lost 4-0 in front of a record-breaking crowd of 1076 in the Hy-Vee Cy-Hawk Series matchup.
Iowa (7-1) scored at the 13:32 mark off the foot of Morgan Showalter after Jenna Aleo played a long pass over the Iowa State (5-2-2) defense.
Iowa State head coach Wendy Dillinger felt her team did not respond to the early Hawkeye goal.
“We gave up an early goal and our backline lost its confidence,” Dillinger said. “It was a much more deflating goal than it should have been. We started to question and second-guess ourselves after that goal.”
The Hawkeyes went on to record goals in the 42nd minute (Ashley Catrell) and at the 68:55 and 75:29 marks. Iowa's last two goals were credited to freshman Leah DeMoss. Alex Melin, Showalter and Keli McLaughlin, respectively, notched the assists on the Hawkeyes' last three goals.
Iowa had a 24-12 shots advantage for the match.
The previous record attendance at the ISU Soccer Complex was 924 which was set in a match against Missouri on Sept. 26, 2008.
Cyclone goalkeeper Maddie Jobe allowed all four goals in 75:40 minutes of play and recorded a career-best 11 saves. Ashley Costanzo came in for the final 14:20 of the match.
Iowa State plays its next match in one week's time at South Dakota State. The match is scheduled to begin at 6 p.m.
