AUSTIN, Texas – Iowa State (18-20, 3-4 Big 12) fell to No. 6 Texas (36-4, 6-0 Big 12), 0-8 in five innings on Friday night at Red & Charline McCombs Field in Austin.
Longhorn ace Blaire Luna (20-1) controlled the game from the first pitch, completing her 17th game of the season and striking out 11 batters while walking two. Luna did not allow an Iowa State hit in the game.
Tori Torrescano (9-9) gave up seven runs, six earned, on 11 hits, walking two and fanning one in three innings of work in the circle to take the loss. Sophomore Madison Jones threw an inning in relief, allowing two hits and one run with no walks or strikeouts.
Taylor Hoagland doubled home the first two runs of the game in the bottom of the second and the following batter, Brejae Washington, made it 3-0 Texas with a sacrifice fly.
The Longhorns added four more runs in the third with RBI-hits from Erin Shireman, Stephanie Ceo and Taylor Thom to take the 7-0 lead as the game entered the fourth frame.
The teams will retake the field for the second game of the weekend series on Saturday at 5 p.m. CDT.
