AMES, Iowa – The Iowa State softball team earned the victory in both ends of its doubleheader against South Dakota Saturday afternoon at the Cyclone Sports Complex. ISU picked up a pair of one-run wins over the Coyotes, taking game one 11-10 and game two 6-5. Iowa State is now 18-9 on the season, while USD fell to 8-17-1.
The Cyclones had to resist a pair of USD rallies, as South Dakota came back from seven runs down in game one and five back in game two to nearly tie it, but ISU was able to leave victorious. Lexi Slater finished the day with three home runs and seven RBIs, while Katie Johnson led in the circle, picking up a save in game one and the win in game two.
Game One: Iowa State 11 South Dakota 10
South Dakota got out to an early 2-0 lead in the second as Yvon Minogue fired a 2-RBI single to get the scoring started. ISU got right to work in the bottom of the inning as Aly Cappaert doubled to lead off the frame, and was brought home two batters later on an RBI single by Kelsey McFarland. The USD lead got restored to three to lead off the third as Matley Jones hit a solo homer over the wall in left. However, the lead was short lived as ISU bounced back in the third as Lexi Slater sent a 2-run homer opposite field to right to tie things back up at 3-3.
South Dakota got back ahead in the fourth via an RBI-single from Jones, but ISU was able to break the game open in the bottom of the fourth as Sammie Hildreth hit her first homer as a Cyclone to right-center. After a Brittany Gomez single, her third hit of the game at that point, and a Cathlin Bingham hit by pitch, Slater cleared the bases with a 3-run homer to center. It marked the 19th multi-home run game in Iowa State history, and the first since Jorden Spendlove hit two last year against North Dakota. The homers got ISU ahead 8-3.
After getting through the visitors half of the fifth unscathed, ISU got back to work, as the first four Cyclones all recorded singles, with Spendlove bringing home a run to end the streak. Gomez and Bingham resumed the streak with singles of their own to bring home a pair of runs and up the lead to 11-4. ISU looked good to secure the run rule with the bases loaded and one out, but USD got out of the jam as Slater lined to her counterpart, Jones, at short and Cappaert flew out to right to end the inning.
South Dakota pounced, starting the inning with a pair of hits to get two in scoring position. Allie Daly brought those home on a 2-RBI single to reduce the ISU lead to five. The lead got cut by two runs again when Brooke Curtis got a 2-RBI single of her own to make it 11-8 ISU. A sac fly by Shelby Keil brought home another run to make it 11-9. Minogue came back up and nearly gave USD the lead as her line drive hit high off the wall. One run came across and USD sent the second, Taylor Steinfeldt around to tie, but Gomez hit the relay in Slater, who fired home to Hildreth who applied the tag to keep ISU ahead 11-10.
That was crucial as ISU went into the seventh maintaining that one run lead. The Cyclones called on Katie Johnson to close it out, and she did in style, striking out the side to get the victory.
Game Two: Iowa State 6 South Dakota 5
The Coyotes were first on the board again, as Daly brought home Minogue on an RBI-double in the first, but ISU wasted no time getting ahead. Gomez led off the bottom of the first with an infield single, and was brought home two batters later as Lexi Slater launched her third homer of the day to right-center to make it 2-1 Cyclones. ISU was not done yet as Maddie Reese tripled and was brought in one batter later by Nychole Antillon. Iowa State added a fourth two batters later as Spendlove sent an RBI-single to second to bring home Antillon and make it 4-1 ISU.
The scoreboard went undisturbed until the fourth inning when Lexi Slater reached base on a two-out error by USD third baseman Keil. Cappaert made the Coyotes pay as she hit her second home of the season, a liner to dead center that made it over the wall, to get ISU ahead 6-1.
South Dakota started its rally in the fifth as Daly brought home her second run of the game on an RBI-single and Katie Cochran added a 2-RBI double later in the inning to reduce the ISU lead to 6-4. With the same score headed to the seventh, the lead became one as Jones hit her second homer of the day to left to make it 6-5 Cyclones. USD pieced together what it needed to tie, or even get the lead: a single by Daly, a walk by Morgan Hancock and a walk by Katie Cochran to load the bases with one out. However, Johnson buckled down again to get the final outs, inducing a pop-up by Brooke Curtis and getting Keil to fly out to end the game in ISU's favor.
