LONG BEACH, Calif. – The Iowa State softball team improved to 12-8 on the season with a 2-0 victory over UC Santa Barbara on the first day of the LBSU Louisville Slugger Invitational. The Cyclones second game of the day vs. Utah Valley was rained out.
Freshman pitcher Savannah Sanders got the shutout for the Cyclones, pitching all seven innings against a UCSB team that entered the day have won seven of its last eight games.
Game One: Iowa State 2, UC Santa Barbara 0
The Cyclones were first on the board in the top of the third inning. Freshman Sally Woolpert got things started with a single to right for the first Iowa State hit of the day. Brittany Gomez reached on an error by the UCSB second baseman, followed by a single from Cathlin Bingham to load the bases for Aly Cappaert. The senior punched a sacrifice fly to center to bring Woolpert home, as Iowa State took a 1-0 lead before the Gauchos got out of the inning.
Starting pitcher Savannah Sanders and the Cyclone defense proceeded to lock up the UCSB offense. Iowa State held the Gauchos three-consecutive innings without a base hit, until a single for Sierra Altmeyer ended the spell in the bottom of the sixth inning. However, two more UCSB pop-ups ended the inning and the threat.
Iowa State was able to tack on one more run in the top of the seventh. Kaylee Bosworth started the inning with a single to right, prior to Kirsten Caudle reaching on a Gaucho error. A nicely-placed bunt by catcher Sammie Hildreth then moved the runners over to second and third with just one out. Gomez walked with two out to load the bases for Cathlin Bingham. Bingham was able to reach first on a dropped third strike, as Bosworth came in to score, giving the Cyclones their 2-0 decision.
Cyclone of the Game
Savannah Sanders. The freshman was excellent throughout, and improved to 5-2 overall on the season with the victory. The Mt. Juliet, Tenn., native went all seven innings, giving up no runs on just four hits, to go with two strikeouts. It was the second complete game shutout of the season for Sanders.
On Deck
Iowa State will play two on Saturday at the LBSU Louisville Slugger Invitational. The Cyclones start the day vs. No. 14 UCLA at 3:30 p.m. CT before an 8:30 p.m. matchup with Long Beach State.
