LONG BEACH, Calif. – The Iowa State softball team (12-10 overall) fell to No. 14 UCLA, 7-1 on Saturday at the LBSU Invitational before falling in a 5-4 heart-breaker to Long Beach State to close the day.
Game One: UCLA 7, Iowa State 1
The Bruins jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the opening inning. After the Cyclones were unable to capitalize on a pair of walks in the first frame, UCLA was able to strike first on a two-out RBI double from Mysha Sataraka. Following a wild pitch to advance the runner to third, Sataraka scored on a called illegal pitch, giving the Bruins a 2-0 advantage.
Starting pitcher Savannah Sanders and the Cyclone defense held the explosive Bruin offense in check for the next four innings. Iowa State was eventually able to get on the scoreboard themselves and cut the UCLA lead in half. Kaila Konz singled to open the fifth inning, and was moved over to second on a sac bunt by Brittany Gomez. After Aly Cappaert was hit by pitch, Kelsey McFarland stepped to the plate and hit an RBI single to left, bringing Konz home. The Bruins led 2-1 through five innings.
The Cyclones got two quick outs in the sixth before UCLA showed off its potent offensive capabilities. Brianna Tautalafua got things started with a two-run home run to center field to push the Bruin lead to 4-1. UCLA brought around three more runs in the inning on six hits, as the Cyclones fell 7-1.
Game Two: Long Beach State 5, Iowa State 4
The Cyclones started the game on a tremendous note offensively and jumped out to quick 3-0 lead in the opening inning. Gomez and Cappaert singled to put runners on first and second for center fielder Kelsey McFarland with one out. The sophomore got ahold of one and launched it over of the fence in left field. The three-run shot was ISU's first of the weekend and McFarland's second of the season.
Long Beach State answered back in the bottom half of the inning. Darian Tautalafua notched an RBI single up the middle to score LT Torres for second to get the 49ers on the board. Haley Tobler brought another run to the plate with an RBI double, cutting the ISU lead to 3-2.
The fireworks in the first inning were not indicative of how the game would go, however, as the ensuing five innings were scoreless. Freshman Savannah Sanders led the way in the circle, and got some outstanding defensive help behind her as well. LBSU mounted a threat in the bottom of the fourth, loading the bases with two outs. However, Gomez made a tremendous diving play in foul territory for the third out, preserving the ISU lead.
The Cyclones tacked another run on the board in the top of the seventh, as freshman Kirsten Caudle hit an infield chopper with runners on the corners and beat the throw for an RBI single. The hit brought Katie Dukes, who was pinch running for Sammie Hildreth, to the plate and put Iowa State ahead 4-2.
Long Beach State was able to rally and put three on the board in the final inning. The 49ers walked a pair of runs in, before an RBI single up the middle by Tierra Falo ended it for a 5-4 LBSU win.
