MACON, Ga. – The Iowa State softball team (11-8 overall) closed out play at the 2016 Black and Orange Challenge, hosted by Mercer University, with a 5-2 loss to Fordham on Sunday.
Fordham 5, Iowa State 2
The Cyclones got on the board first in the bottom of the third inning. Brittany Gomez got things started as she singled on a bunt in the lead off position. The senior then stole second, her 13th stolen base of the season. Junior Cathlin Bingham subsequently moved Gomez over to third with a sacrifice bunt. Aly Cappaert came to the plate and drove an RBI single to left, as Gomez came in to score. The Cyclones totaled three hits and one run in the inning.
Fordham responded in a big way in the ensuing inning. The Rams got two runners aboard via a walk and a HBP with one out in the top of the fourth. Senior Rachel Gillen then stepped to the plate and hit her first home run of the season to put Fordham ahead 3-1.
Cappaert helped ISU close the gap in the bottom of the fifth. The senior came up to bat with two outs and crushed a solo home run over the fence in center field. It was Cappaert's sixth home run of the season and cut the Ram lead to 3-2.
However, Fordham answered right back in the top of the sixth inning. Sydney Canessa got things started with a solo home run to lead off. The Rams later manufactured a second run via a Cyclone defensive error to give them the 5-2 cushion.
