Senior Aly Cappaert left her mark on Saturday's game in the early going with a two-run home run in the top of the first inning to put the Cyclones on the board first. The Ankeny, Iowa, native came to the plate with one out and teammate Brittany Gomez on second, following a lead-off base hit. With a 2-0 count, Cappaert launched her ninth homer of the season, easily clearing the fence in left center, and giving the Cardinal and Gold a 2-0 advantage.
However, the Red Raiders responded in kind with two runs of their own in the home half of the inning on a two-run homer courtesy of Kierra Miles. Texas Tech then took their first lead of the weekend with three runs in the bottom of the second inning. The lead-off hitter reached on an error, followed by three consecutive Red Raider base hits, and TTU took a 5-2 advantage. Savannah Sanders relieved Cyclone starter Emma Hylen after the first two batters of the frame.
Sanders and the Cyclone defense were able to lock down the explosive Texas Tech offense from that point forward, giving up just one hit in the game's final four innings. The Cyclones attempted a rally, scoring a run in the top of the sixth. Hope Scheffert recorded an RBI single with the bases loaded, but ISU was unable to capitalize further and the Red Raiders went on to win 5-3.
