AMES, Iowa – The Iowa State softball team (19-28, 1-10 Big 12) fell to No. 9 Oklahoma (40-7, 11-1 Big 12) in a pair of games on Friday at the Cyclone Sports Complex. The Cyclones dropped a tight 4-2 decision in game one, before an 8-1 Sooner victory wrapped up the day.
Game One: Oklahoma 4, Iowa State 2
Oklahoma got on the board first on a Fale Aviu RBI single to left, taking a 1-0 lead after the opening frame. However, the Cyclones were in for a tremendous effort from starting pitcher Savannah Sanders, who got strong support from her defense throughout.
Sanders held the explosive Sooner offense scoreless through the next three innings. In home half of the fourth, the Iowa State offense came alive. Cathlin Bingham got the rally started with a tremendous at-bat. The junior from Ankeny, Iowa battled OU ace Paige Parker to a full count, fouling off seven pitches before she found the right one. Bingham drove the ball up the middle for a single, putting a runner on with no outs for Aly Cappaert.
Cappaert, a fellow Ankeny, Iowa native, then stepped to the plate and crushed a Parker pitch to dead center field for a two-run homer, giving the Cyclones a 2-1 advantage with one swing of the bat. The shot marked Cappaert's 11th home run of the season.
Oklahoma would find an answer in the top of the fifth with a two-RBI single from Nicole Pendley to re-take the lead at 3-2. The Cyclones threatened in bottom of the sixth putting speedsters Katie Dukes and Brittany Gomez on second and third, but were unable to bring around the tying run. The Sooners notched an insurance run in the seventh for a 4-2 win.
Despite the loss, Sanders was excellent in the circle throughout. The freshman went all seven innings, giving up four runs on six hits, to go with two strikeouts against the vaunted OU offensive attack.
Game Two: Oklahoma 8, Iowa State 1
Oklahoma came out and took control early in the second game of the day, taking a 3-0 lead in the first frame on a three-run home run from Aviu. The Sooners extended their lead in the third inning courtesy of another homer, this one brought two runs off the bat of Caleigh Clifton.
After a pair of scoreless frames, Oklahoma was back at it again, with a three-run top of the sixth inning. Pendley, Macey Hatfield and Sydney Romero all recorded RBI singles for OU.
Iowa State got on the board in the home half of the inning. Antillon led off the frame with by hammering a double down the right field line for the Cyclones' first extra-base hit of the game. Dukes then entered to pinch run and was eventually moved over to third on a passed ball. Catcher Sammie Hildreth brought Dukes home on a sacrifice fly to get ISU on the board, making it 8-1.
Sally Woolpert, who was tremendous defensively on the day while manning third base for the Cyclones, led off the bottom of the seventh with a single to left, but that was all the offense ISU could generate in the frame. Kelsey Stevens got the win for Oklahoma, moving to 9-4 on the year.
Antillon and Kaila Konz, who was stationed in right field for both games, were the lone Cyclones with multiple hits in the game.
