AMES, Iowa – Iowa State was unable to keep up with Texas Saturday at the Cyclone Sports Complex, as the Longhorns hit five home runs en route to defeating the Cyclones 14-3 in five innings. The loss drops ISU to 20-31 on the year and 1-13 in Big 12 play, Texas is now 36-14 and 9-7 in conference competition.
The Cyclones' scoring came on a 3-RBI double by Nychole Antillon in the third inning. Saturday was Senior Day at the Cyclone Sports Complex, as ISU celebrated the careers of Aly Cappaert, Brittany Gomez and Sammie Hildreth.
Texas Power Surge Continues
The Longhorns had a big day going deep on Friday, recording four home runs, and that form continued in the first inning against the Cyclones on Saturday. Celina Felix got her second home run in as many days with a 2-run big fly to center to make it 2-0 Longhorns. Holly Kern made it back-to-back home runs with a big shot to make it 3-0 UT.
Lindsey Stephens got into the act in the second, as she got the green light and took Emma Hylen's 2-0 offering comfortably over the wall in dead center for a 2-run home run to up the Longhorn advantage to 6-0. Stephens got another 2-run home run in the bottom of the third, taking a pitch over the wall in right to up the Texas edge to 8-0.
Antillon Comes Up Clutch
Iowa State produced a two-out rally in the bottom of the third inning, with a Cathlin Bingham walk, and singles by Aly Cappaert and Kelsey McFarland to load the bases. Nychole Antillon has struggled with the bases loaded in 2016, going just 1-for-12 with three runners on. However, on this occasion she delivered, driving a 3-RBI double to the wall to clear the bases and cut the UT lead to 8-3.
Texas Blasts Ahead Again
The Longhorn offense got back to work in the top of the fourth, loading the bases with two outs to set the stage for Holly Kern, who copied Antillon's 3-run double to left-center in the same fashion to restore UT's eight-run lead at 11-3. Kern was not on base for long as UT's starting pitcher Paige von Sprecken took a 3-1 offering from Brianna Weilbacher over the wall in left to get ahead 13-3.
