10.26.2017 | Soccer
AMES, Iowa - The Iowa State Soccer team (2-12-3) will close out its 2017 regular season slate this weekend with a trip to Manhattan, Kan. to take on Kansas State (6-10-1). The Cyclones and Wildcats are set to play at 7 p.m. at the K-State Soccer Complex.
Friday's match will mark the first time Iowa State and Kansas State have ever met on the pitch. The Wildcats are in their first season of competing in the Big 12 after starting their program in 2016. The match will be streamed live on K-StateHD.TV.
Scouting the Wildcats
K-State's losing streak reached four matches, as the Wildcats dropped a pair of matches last weekend in Oklahoma, as the Wildcats fell at 24th ranked Oklahoma State, 2-1, and at Oklahoma, 3-2. Sunday's match at Oklahoma marked the first time K-State scored two or more goals in a Big 12 match.
K-State took a 1-0 lead in both matches last weekend. Freshman Hannah Davis found the head of fellow freshman Avery Green on a corner kick at 5:20 of the match against the Cowgirls. It was the earliest goal of the season for Kansas State and the second earliest in program history. With the assist, Davis set the school record for a single season with her fifth.
Cyclone Soccer Headlines
-The Cyclones are looking to bounce back from an 0-1-1 weekend at the Cyclone Sports Complex. Iowa State fell to TCU, 1-0 on Thursday, before a 1-1 2OT tie against Texas Tech on Sunday. Both matches went to overtime.
-Shea Sullivan and Hannah Cade connected on Iowa State's equalizing goal in the final minutes vs. Texas Tech to send the match to overtime. The Red Raiders held a 1-0 advantage on a goal by Carly Wickenheiser (45'), but Sullivan played a beautiful cross in, finding Cade at the far post in the 87th minute. The sophomore buried the chance for her first goal of the season.
-Iowa State is now T-No. 1 nationally in overtime matches played this season with eight. The Cyclones are one of eight Division I teams to play eight overtime matches, including one of just two teams from a "Power 5" conference (Nebraska).
-Unfortunately, the close matches haven't gone Iowa State's way, as the Cyclones are 0-5-3 on the season in overtime contests. Five of the eight OT matches were in Big 12 play (at BU, vs. OU, vs. OSU, vs. TCU, vs. Texas Tech).
-Center back Jordan Enga has been one of Iowa State's top performers, stabalizing an otherwise injury-riddled ISU back line this season. Enga ranks No. 1 on the team in playing time with 1,600 of 1,615 possible minutes played so far this season. She has not been subbed out of a match since Aug. 21 vs. Minnesota.
-Iowa State's freshman class has gotten valuable experience this season, with five different newcomers garnering at least one start: McKenna Schultz, Dayja Schwichtenberg, Abby Harbin, Courtney Powell and Shea Sullivan. Powell ranks No. 2 on the team in goals (2) and points (5). In total, freshmen have logged 3,238 minutes in 84 appearances this season.
-Sunday's match vs. Texas Tech marked Senior Day and the last match at the Cyclone Sports Complex for Iowa State's senior class of Lindsey Hendon, Brianna Johnson, Sasha Stinson and Stella Maris Strohman.
-Strohman broke through with the first goal of her career vs. Oklahoma State. The native of Ames, Iowa, came up with the equalizer in the 29th minute off an assist from Courtney Powell. After Powell's head careened off the OU keeper's hands, Strohman sliced through the box to gather the rebound and put it in the back of the net.
-Medelberg has come on of late, scoring three of ISU's last five goals to lead all Cyclones this season. The junior forward ranks first on the team in points (6) and goals (3), and is No. 2 on the team in shots (33) and shots on goal (12). Medelberg is one goal shy of her 2016 season total of four.
-No. 7 West Virginia was the fifth NSCAA top-25 opponent so far this season for the Cyclones. Iowa State has now played four teams currently in the nation's top 20 (No. 5 USC, No. 8 Texas, No. 9 West Virginia and No. 17 Florida).
