Williams' Two Home Runs Propel Cyclones

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Iowa State (6-3) moved to 4-0 on the weekend at the Tiger Classic by defeating host Tennessee State (3-4), 9-0 on Saturday afternoon. Freshman Sami Williams hit two home runs in the game for five RBIs, while starting pitcher Brianna Weilbacher recorded a career-high 11 strikeouts.
With the win, Weilbacher moves to 2-0 on the season, having given up no runs on just three hits in an excellent outing.

Iowa State got off to a rare slow start on offense in their second game of the day, after putting up a school record 21 runs vs. Alabama A&M in the early game. Despite going scoreless in first three frames, the Cyclones stayed in good shape behind an impressive performance from Weilbacher. The junior kept the Tiger offense at bay throughout the game and issued just two walks en route to her career day in the strikeout department.
Williams broke the game open in a big way in the top of the fourth inning. With Kelsey McFarland and Jaiden Johnson on base, the freshman stepped up and launched a home run to center field to give the Cyclones a 3-0 lead. It was her second dinger of the day after recording her first career home run in the first game vs. AAMU. ISU tacked on two more runs later in the inning, including an RBI single from Kirsten Caudle.
In the ensuing inning, Williams struck again with yet another home run. Her two-run shot, providing her fourth and fifth RBIs of the game, extended the Cyclone lead to 7-0. Iowa State added two more runs in the final inning for a 9-0 victory.

Iowa State will close out the Tiger Classic on Sunday with a noon match-up against Tennessee State.
