Cyclones Fall At UAB

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Iowa State (7-6) fell at UAB (3-8) by a score of 7-1 on Saturday on day two of the Samford/UAB Tournament. Senior Rachel Hartman got her second home run of the season on a shot to left field, but the Cyclones collected just three hits in the loss.

The Blazers opened things up with a solo home run in the bottom of the first inning, courtesy of a two-out shot to center by Madison Millsaps. It continued ISU's trend of falling in an early hole at the tournament, after the Cyclones also got in trouble on Friday, with all 10 of their runs surrendered on the day coming in the first inning.

Hartman responded for the Cyclones in the top of the second, drilling a solo shot down the left field line. It was the Las Flores, Calif., native's second home run of the season and knotted the game at 1-1.

UAB got another two-out homer in the home half of the frame on a two-run dinger by Amy Waters, as the Blazers retook the lead, 3-1. The home squad tacked on an additional run in the third, as relief pitcher Brianna Weilbacher walked in a run with the bases loaded before a big swinging strikeout to get out of the jam.

The Blazers struck again in the home half of the fifth, scoring three runs, including a two-RBI single by Waters. The offensive surge by UAB led to a re-entry for starting pitcher Savannah Sanders for ISU to get out of the inning, trailing 7-1.

Iowa State was held scoreless in the final five innings, falling to 0-3 on the weekend in Birmingham.

The Cyclones will close out the Samford/UAB Tournament on Sunday with a game against Murray State at Samford Field at 9 a.m. CT.
