DAVIS, Calif. – Iowa State (10-12) split a pair of games on Saturday at the Aggie Invitational, starting the day with a 4-1 loss to San Jose State (17-9) before a 6-5 thriller over Seton Hall (9-8-1) in comeback fashion.
The Cyclones trailed 4-2 heading into the top of the seventh inning against the Pirates, but a four-run rally in the frame propelled ISU to victory. Both Sami Williams and Kaila Konz collected two-RBI base hits in the inning, while Kirsten Caudle put together a strong performance in the win. The sophomore went 2-for-2 at the plate with two runs scored, and also drew a pair of walks.
San Jose State 4, Iowa State 1
The Cyclone offense was largely stifled in the opening game of the day, facing San Jose State ace Katelyn Linford, who improved to 11-2 on the season with the win. The Iowa State pitching staff held the Spartans in check for the much of the day as well, giving up just three total hits on the day. However, two of SJSU's hits were triples that resulted in runs, and the Spartans also drew nine walks.
Casey Watt drove in the first run of the game in the bottom of the fifth inning on what was San Jose State's first hit. Watt drove a triple to right-center to score the first of two Spartan runs in the frame. Chelsea Jenner hit another triple to open the following inning, sparking two more runs and a 4-0 advantage for SJSU.
Sami Williams attempted to jump-start a rally in the top of the seventh, crushing a solo home run to center field with two outs for Iowa State's first run of the game. The dinger tied Williams for the team lead with four homers on the season. The Spartans would later close the door for the 4-1 win.
Iowa State 6, Seton Hall 5
Iowa State struck first in the top of the fourth inning after both teams struggled to manufacture offense in the early going. A Talyn Lewis walk, followed by Iowa State's first hit of the day courtesy of Caudle got things going. Caudle and Megan Schweitzer, pinch running for Lewis, stole second and third with two outs to set up the opportunity. Schweitzer, a freshman, would capitalize on a wild pitch by Seton Hall, racing home to give the Cyclones a 1-0 lead.
Seton Hall answered the call with three runs in the bottom of the fifth, including an RBI double from Sara Foster and a two-run home run by Lauren Fischer. The homer gave the Pirates their first lead of the game at 3-1.
Iowa State cut the lead back to one in the top of the sixth, as Caudle collected her second hit of the day on a single to left. The speedy left fielder then stole second and was moved over to third. On a Seton Hall wild pitch, Caudle was safe at the plate for Iowa State's second run of the day on heads-up base running. The Pirates would quickly get the run back, scoring a run in the home half of the inning to go ahead 4-2.
Kelsey McFarland and Rachel Hartman got the Cyclone rally started in the top of the seventh inning with Iowa State down to its final chance. Later in the inning, Williams stepped the plate with one out and laced a two-RBI double to right-center to knot the game at 4-4. Following walks for Caudle and Kaylee Bosworth to load the bases, Kaila Konz stepped up with one of the biggest hits of the season for the Cyclones. The junior smacked a two-out, two-RBI single down the left field line to score Williams and Caudle, giving Iowa State a 6-4 lead.
Iowa State would hold off a rally in the bottom of the seventh to win 6-5 and improve to 2-1 on the weekend.
