FORT MYERS, Fla. – Iowa State (15-16) took down FGCU (16-13) in the Cyclones' final game of the Spring Break Classic at FGCU Softball Complex. ISU closed out the tournament with a 4-1 record on the weekend, and avenged its only loss in Saturday's finale.
Starting pitcher Brianna Weilbacher threw a complete game, giving up two runs (one earned) on seven hits while striking out seven Eagle batters to improve to 9-6 on the season. Junior Kaila Konz went 2-for-3 at the plate with an RBI, a run and a stolen base.
Iowa State 5, FGCU 2
Iowa State found itself in an early hole, as FGCU put a run on the board in the bottom of the first inning. Lead-off batter Natalie Lopez drew a walk, stole second and third base, and would then come in to score on a Cyclone error, giving the hosts a 1-0 lead.
Iowa State returned the favor in the top of the third frame, capitalizing on an Eagle miscue to knot the game at 1-1. Cathlin Bingham reached on an error with two outs to get ISU started, and was moved over on a single by Megan Schweitzer. Sami Williams then reached on the second FGCU error of the inning, and the speedy Bingham rounded third and put Iowa State on the board.
The Cyclones took their first lead of the day on a wild play in the top of the sixth inning. Talyn Lewis reached on an Eagle error, followed by a bunt for a single by Konz. Iowa State then took FGCU by surprise, putting on a double steal. The Eagles made a pair of throwing errors on the play, allowing both Lewis and Konz to race home and break the tie.
The seventh inning was more of the same, as the Cyclones tacked two more runs on the board. Williams started the spurt with a two-out single to center field for her second hit of the day. Kelsey McFarland would then follow suit, lacing a single to right. Williams raced to third on the play, and a throwing error on the FGCU right fielder allowed the first run to score. Later in the inning, Konz collected an RBI single to score McFarland and extend the ISU lead to 5-1.
FGCU would cut into the deficit with a run in the bottom of the seventh, but Weilbacher slammed the door shut with a strikeout to deliver Iowa State the win.
