TULSA, Okla. – Iowa State's Marcus Harrington has punched his ticket to the NCAA Championships in St. Louis, Mo. The redshirt sophomore took fifth place at the 2017 Big 12 Championship and earned an automatic-qualifying spot.
Harrington suffered a loss in the consolation semifinals, but still had a shot at the national championships with the fifth-place match. He made the most of his chance, knocking off No. 7 Cordell Eaton of NDSU by 14-11 decision.
As a team, Iowa State (1-12, 1-6 Big 12) finished in sixth place with 65 team points.
Medal Rounds
The Cyclones put eight wrestlers on the podium in Tulsa. Redshirt senior Lelund Weatherspoon finished fourth at 174 pounds, redshirt seniors Kyle Larson, Earl Hall, Carson Powell and Quean Smith, as well as Harrington took fifth. Redshirt senior John Meeks and redshirt freshman Colston DiBlasi finished in sixth place at their respective weights.
After defeating Kimball Bastian of Utah Valley by 10-8 decision, Weatherspoon battled David Kocer for third place and an automatic-qualifying spot at 174 pounds. Kocer outlasted Weatherspoon, taking the match 8-5.
A quartet of Iowa State seniors ended their Big 12 careers on top. Larson, Hall, Powell and Smith all added one last victory to their conference championship resume.
Larson was dominant in his bout against Ben Gillette of South Dakota State. The West Des Moines, Iowa, native racked up 1:35 of riding time in a 9-3 decision over the Jack Rabbit.
At 133 pounds, Hall squared up with Air Force's Dylan Hyder. A six-point sequence in the first period was the catalyst to an 8-5 victory for Hall.
For the second time this tournament, Powell was pitted against NDSU's Tyler McNutt. Just like their first round meeting, Powell was a force in the top position. The First-Team Academic All-Big 12 member picked up 1:01 of riding time in a 9-3 win over McNutt.
In his ISU finale, Smith earned his second fall on the season. In the first period, he launched Wyoming's Brandon Tribble with a lateral drop. The Detroit, Mich., native secured the fall in just 1:55.
Day One
After the first day of action from the BOK Center, eight Cyclones remained in the hunt for an NCAA Championship birth.
The Cyclones sent four wrestlers to the semifinals in redshirt seniors Earl Hall, Lelund Weatherspoon and Carson Powell, while redshirt freshman Colston DiBlasi joined the group of veterans in the final four.
The semifinal round didn't produce any finalists for ISU. The four were sent to the backside of the bracket.
