AMES, Iowa – The Iowa State wrestling team is strapped for a Sunday matinee with West Virginia. The Cyclones and Mountaineers will take to the mat in Hilton Coliseum at 2 p.m. on Sunday afternoon.
The Cyclones are returning home after a successful weekend at the Virginia duals. There, the Cyclones posted a 4-1 record and have now won five of their last six contests.

ISU vs. WVU History
- Iowa State holds a 15-2 advantage all time in the series against West Virginia.
- ISU and WVU first competed against one another on Feb. 10, 1922. Iowa State won the first meeting, taking down West Virginia in Ames, 17-5.
- Last year, the Mountaineers notched their first victory over the Cyclones in 14 years, winning the dual 22-20.
Cyclone Notebook
-Iowa State is set for a Big 12 conference Sunday matinee with West Virginia. The Cyclones and the Mountaineers will wrestle at 2 p.m. in Hilton Coliseum. The match will be broadcast live through Cyclones.TV.
-The ISU-WVU series is one of the oldest in college wrestling. The Cyclones and Mountaineers first squared off on Feb. 10, 1922. Iowa State won the dual 17-5 in Ames. Since then, Iowa State has a firm grasp on the series lead, 15-2. Last year, the Mountaineers picked up their first win over the Cyclones in 14 years, defeating Iowa State 22-20 in Morgantown.
-ISU will be looking to win its fourth straight dual on Sunday after posting a 4-1 record at the Virginia Duals. In Hampton, the Cyclones took down Virginia, Old Dominion, Lock Haven and Fresno State. Their only defeat came at the hands of eventual tournament champion, Arizona State.
-After starting the year 0-4 in dual competition, the Cardinal and Gold are red hot having won five out of their last six contests, including three in a row.
-The Cyclones last conference dual win came against West Virginia on Feb. 14, 2016. Iowa State will look to etch its first Big 12 victory in nearly two years on Sunday afternoon.
-Against Fresno State, ISU wrestlers accounted for four total bonus-point victories, three of which came by fall. Both were season highs. Markus Simmons and Kanen Storr locked up first period falls, Chase Straw won by major decision and Dane Pestano pinned his opponent in the waning moments of his match at 184 pounds.
-In their dual against Old Dominion, the Cyclones garnered a season-high seven individual victories. Ian Parker, Logan Breitenbach, Dane Pestano, Sam Colbray and Marcus Harrington all won their bouts by decision, while Kanen Storr won by medical forfeit and Jarrett Degen won by major decision.
-It came down to the final match for Cyclones to beat Virginia. The Cyclones' bonus-point victories, which came from Jarrett Degen (fall), Chase Straw (tech fall), and Dane Pestano (maj. dec.), led the dual to be tied 18-18 after nine matches. At heavyweight, Marcus Harrington earned a takedown late in the third period to push him past Virginia's Tyler Love, 3-2, to give Iowa State the victory over the Cavaliers.
-Iowa State has three wrestlers receiving national rankings. Ian Parker (19, 20, 14), Kanen Storr (12, 16, 16) and Jarrett Degen (NR, NR, 22) are all in this week's FloWrestling, Intermat and the Trackwrestling polls.
-Prior to the defeat of Oregon State, the Cyclones hadn't won a dual since Nov. 26, 2016. ISU also broke a nine-match home losing streak, which dated back to Feb. 14, 2016.
-Dresser and his staff have had to manage a very young Iowa State roster this season. Of the 34 Iowa State wrestlers, only 17 of them were on the team last year. The squad also consists of 26 underclassmen (freshmen or sophomores.)
-In total, 20 wrestlers have competed for Iowa State in dual competition this season, which is well over half of the roster. The Cyclones have featured a different lineup in all nine duals this season.
-In nine dual competitions, the Cyclones have four wrestlers with six or more wins. Kanen Storr (8), Jarrett Degen (7), Dane Pestano (6) and Marcus Harrington (6) have been anchors in the Iowa State lineup.
-Since joining the lineup for the dual against Rider, redshirt freshman Jarrett Degen has been outstanding for Iowa State. He's compiled a 14-3 record and is a perfect 7-0 in duals. Degen has recorded 19 takedowns, two two-point near falls, three four-point near falls and three reversals. He's also scored two points via riding time in dual action.
-Kanen Storr leads the team in dual wins (8) and takedowns (29). He's been outstanding in dual action this season with his only loss coming to Wyoming's No. 1 Bryce Meredith. In dual matches that haven't ended in fall or medical forfeit, Storr is outscoring his opponents by a combined 57-26.
-At the Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational, Kanen Storr finished eighth place at 141-pounds. Storr posted a 3-3 record in Vegas in a loaded 141-pound bracket that featured 12 wrestlers ranked in the top-20.
