AMES, Iowa – The Iowa State wrestling team (1-0, 0-0 Big 12) will square up with in-state rival No. 3 Iowa (4-0, 1-0 Big 10) on Saturday, Dec. 1 at 2 p.m. in Carver Hawkeye Arena in this year's Iowa Corn Cy-Hawk Dual.
After the fall series, Iowa State leads the Iowa Corn Cy-Hawk Series 6-5. Two points will be on the line during Saturday's dual.
Cyclone Headlines
-The Iowa State wrestling team will hit the road this weekend in the latest installment of the Iowa Corn Cy-Hawk Dual. ISU is set to take on Iowa at 2 p.m. on Saturday. The dual will be streamed live on BTN Plus and FloWrestling.org.
-The Cyclones will be looking to break a 14-match losing streak to the Hawkeyes that dates back to 2005. Overall, Iowa leads the series 16-63-3 all-time.
-After the fall series, Iowa State leads the Iowa Corn Cy-Hawk Series 6-5 with wins in Soccer, Women's Cross Country and Men's Cross Country. Two more points will be on the line on Saturday afternoon.
-ISU is a fringe top-25 program. Trackwrestling ranks Iowa State No. 25 this week and InterMat ranked Iowa State No. 23 in this week's dual rankings. The Cyclones are receiving votes in the NWCA Coaches Poll.
-Individually, Iowa State has four wrestlers ranked across the board. Austin Gomez (14, NR, NR, 20), Jarrett Degen (12, 14, 14, 9), Marcus Coleman (NR, NR, NR, 21) and Willie Miklus (5, 5, 5, 5) all begin the season in the national InterMat, FloWrestling, OpenMat and Trackwrestling rankings.
-Last time out, Iowa State rolled through SIU-E, 37-3. In the dual, the Cyclones won nine of the 10 bouts. It was the largest victory (34) and most points scored (37) by an ISU team since Iowa State beat George Mason 39-2 at the Virginia Duals on Jan. 8, 2016.
-Iowa State wrestling fans were treated to a bunch of new faces in the victory against the Cougars. The Cyclone lineup featured six wrestlers that were making their first dual appearance in Ames. Alex Mackall, Austin Gomez, Brady Jennings, Marcus Coleman, Willie Miklus and Gannon Gremmel were all victorious in their first dual outing in Ames.
-The Cyclones had a solid showing at the Lindenwood Open. In total, seven ISU grapplers reached the finals in the Open Division, with Austin Gomez, Jarrett Degen, Daid Carr and Willie Miklus all bringing home titles. Corey Cabanban won the Fresh/Soph Division at 125 pounds.
-At the Cyclone Open, a total of 18 wrestlers finished in the top-3 at their respective weight, while three Cyclones, Alex Mackall, Willie Miklus and Francis Duggan all earned titles.
-The Iowa State lineup on Sunday will feature many new faces. Alex Mackall, Austin Gomez, Brady Jennings, Marcus Coleman, Willie Miklus and Gannon Gremmel will all be making their first dual appearance in Ames. Last season, Jennings and Gremmel each wrestled in one dual on the road.
-Kevin Dresser enters his second season as Iowa State's head coach. Last season, Dresser coached Iowa State to an 8-10 dual record, a vast improvement from a team that went 1-12 in 2016-17.
-Dresser improved is all-time dual wins to 169 against SIU-E. He currently ranks as the No. 16 winningest active coach in Division I wrestling.
-The Iowa State wrestling coaching staff received a shakeup in the offseason. Brent Metcalf, who was a volunteer assistant coach in 2017-18 has been promoted to a full-time assistant coach this season.
-Including those three transfers, Iowa State welcomes a total of 19 new faces to the program, including 15 freshmen.
-Dresser's incoming recruiting class was tabbed in the top-10 by FloWrestling. It included the No. 2 overall recruit in the nation, David Carr and nationally ranked Joel Shapiro, Francis Duggan and Grant Stotts.
-With all of the youth, Iowa State does return a lot of experience. Of the 22 returners this season, 12 wrestled in a dual at some point last season
