CEDAR FALLS, Iowa – The No. 23 Iowa State wrestling team (1-1, 0-0 Big 12) sent 28 wrestlers to the UNI Open on Saturday. In total, 10 Cyclone grapplers finished in the top-six of their respective weight classes, including championship performances from Alex Mackall (125), David Carr (157) and Marcus Coleman (174).
Ryan Leisure (141), Joel Shapiro (184) and Gannon Gremmel (285) all suffered losses on the front side of the bracket, but bounced back to take third place in their weight class. Chase Straw (157) and Francis Duggan (285) both earned fourth place finishes, while Danny Bush (184) and Brady Jennings (165) took fifth and sixth place, respectively.
Mackall rolled to a 4-0 record on Saturday. He opened up with victories over Cevion Severado of Missouri and Jacob Schipper of Northern Iowa. He reached the finals after Minnesota's Skyler Petry was forced to medical forfeit out of the tournament. In the finals, Mackall faced Minnesota's highly touted freshman Patrick McKee. Mackall dispatched the Gopher by 5-1 decision to take the title at 125 pounds.
At 157 pounds, Carr continued to impress during his redshirt campaign. Since dropping his first match at the Cyclone Open, Carr is a perfect 18-0 and has now captured three open titles. He wrestled to a 5-0 record on Saturday. He reached the semifinals by pinning Missouri's Derek McDaniel in 1:37, defeating Ethan Karsten of Iowa Central by 18-3 technical fall and UNI's Cayd Lara by 11-2 major decision.
In the semifinals, Carr squared up with Minnesota's Brayton Lee. Coming out of high school, Carr was tabbed the No. 1 recruit at 152 pounds, while Lee was ranked No. 2. Carr advanced to the UNI Open finals with a 6-0 victory over Lee. In the finals, Carr took down Wisconsin's Devin Bahr by 8-2 decision.
Coleman defended his 2017 UNI Open title. The Ames, Iowa, native posted a 3-0 record on the day, racking up 51 match points in only three matches. He took out Minnesota's Bailee O'Reilly by 12-5 decision, followed by Iowa Central's Ashton Eyler by 17-10 decision. In the finals, Coleman defeated UNI's Austin Yant by 22-10 major decision.

Iowa State returns to Hilton Coliseum this weekend for one more contest before winter break. The No. 23 Cyclones are set to take on Ohio at 6 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 16 in Hilton Coliseum. That dual will be streamed live on Cyclones.TV and FloWrestling.org.
