LAS VEGAS, Nev. – Iowa State (3-4) split a pair of games on Friday at the 2018 Marucci Desert Classic. The Cyclones took down Boise State (4-4) 7-2 in game one before falling 3-1 to Long Beach State (5-1.)
Iowa State 7, Boise State 2
The Cyclones took a 2-1 lead early, capitalizing on three first-inning Bronco errors after BSU drew first blood with a Jessica McKay RBI single down the left field line. Hannah Carter and Taylor Nearad jump-started Iowa State's offense, reaching on an error followed by a walk, respectively. Sami Williams then reached on another BSU error, and Carter raced home to tie the game at 1-1.
Boise State's third error of the frame came on a fielder's choice and an errant throw by the BSU second baseman, as Nearad scored from second to give Iowa State its first lead.
Shaelee Pearson put down a perfect bunt in the top of the second inning to tie the game. Pearson's offering snuck through the left side of the Iowa State infield to score Justene Molina and tie the game at 2-2.
Cyclone starting pitcher Emma Hylen and her defense were outstanding from that point forward, putting up five-straight scoreless innings to close the game. The Broncos left 11 runners stranded on base throughout the game, but Hylen came up big when it mattered. The native of Roseville, Minn., rang up five strikeouts and allowed just two runs on six hits.
The Iowa State offense found its rhythm in the bottom of the third with a two-out rally. Williams drew a walk and Sydney Stites reached on BSU's fourth error of the game. Freshman Cara Beatty, playing in her hometown of Las Vegas, then stepped to the plate and ripped an RBI single up the middle to score Williams.
Nychole Antillon followed suit with a two-RBI single through the right side, scoring Stites and Beatty to give Iowa State a 5-2 lead it would not surrender.
Iowa State added a pair of insurance runs in the sixth when Beatty and Talyn Lewis drew bases-loaded walks to extend the Cyclone advantage to 7-2.
Long Beach State 3, Iowa State 1
Iowa State was unable to get its offense going in the nightcap vs. Long Beach State, as LBSU pitcher Cielo Meza put together an outstanding performance. Iowa State notched four hits in the game while Meza racked up 15 strikeouts.
The Beach got on the board in the home half of the second inning. With runners on the corners, Nichole Fry reached on a fielder's choice, scoring teammate Grayce Majam to give LBSU a 1-0 lead. ISU starter Brianna Weilbacher worked out of the jam and avoided a bigger inning, but the Cyclones were unable to respond.
Long Beach State tacked on two insurance runs in the bottom of the fourth, both via bases-loaded walks. Iowa State used three pitchers in the inning, as Weilbacher was replaced by Savannah Sanders, who eventually exited in favor of freshman Julie Lewis.
The Cyclones fought back, as Lewis held LBSU scoreless in the fifth and sixth innings, and the ISU offense showed signs of life in the top of the seventh. Williams got things going by crushing a solo home run over the fence in right center field to get Iowa State on the board. Stites then stepped to the plate and hit her second double of the game to bring the tying run to the plate. However, the Cyclones were unable to do any more damage, as Meza got out of the inning for a 3-1 LBSU win.
