WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Iowa State (1-2) dropped a 1-0 decision to No. 19 Northwestern (3-0) on Friday in the opening match of the Boilermaker Challenge Cup. The Cyclone effort was undone by a late first-half goal by the nationally-ranked Wildcats.
Turning Point of the Game
The Cyclones battled Northwestern throughout much of the half and looked like they would have an opportunity to head into the halftime locker room with the score knotted at 0-0. However, the Wildcats broke up those plans with a goal late in the period to take a 1-0 advantage. Sophomore forward Kayleigh Stahlschmidt came streaking in from the right corner of the box and put away the chance off an assist from Haley Lawson.
Cyclone Game Ball Goes to...
Jordan Enga and Marin Daniel. The Cyclone center backs helped keep Iowa State in Friday's match, particularly early in the first half when Northwestern's offensive attack was at its peak. Enga and Daniel weathered the storm as the Wildcats pressed forward, tallying eight first-half shots, repeatedly turning way NW chances.
Coach Speak
"I thought the first half we were on our heels too much and gave too much ground," head coach Tony Minatta said. "The reserves came in and gave us good energy. We started out the second half the same, but then we got some really good minutes from Taylor Bee and Kara Privitera. Those freshmen came in and we got some opportunities and found a combination of players that were really competing. We had a good opportunity there to get the game back, but that's a good team we played. They're ranked for a reason. We need to build from it and grow."
On Deck
Iowa State will return to Folk Field to take on the hosting Purdue Boilermakers on Sunday at 2 p.m. CT. The match will be streamed live on BTN2GO.
