WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Iowa State (1-3) fell 2-1 to Purdue (2-0-1) in heartbreaking and controversial fashion on Sunday in the final game of the Boilermaker Challenge Cup. The Cyclones were tied 1-1 with the Boilermakers in the closing moments of regulation when Purdue scored the game-winning goal off a free kick in the 90th minute.
Turning Point of the Game
A hand ball was called on the Cyclones with just 13.2 seconds remaining in regulation, and it appeared the match would head to overtime. However, rather than the time continuing to wind down, the game clock was stopped, allowing the home team to prepare a set piece for one final chance at goal. Purdue's Sarah Clark took the free kick and found Kylie Hase in the box for the game-winning goal.
Cyclone Game Ball Goes to...
The Iowa State bench. Head coach Tony Minatta utilized 20 field players during Sunday's match in an attempt to combat extreme heat at Folk Field, and the bench came through for him with tremendous energy. It was a combination of subs, Brianna Curtis and Kara Privitera, that teamed up for the highlight of the match. Curtis, a senior, played a beautiful ball forward over the Boilermaker back line to find a streaking Privitera in the box. Privitera, a freshman, then maneuvered around Purdue's keeper to bury her first goal as a Cyclone in the 41st minute, giving Iowa State a 1-0 lead. Curtis notched her first assist of the season on the play.
