AMES, Iowa -- The No. 23 Iowa State wrestling team (2-1, 0-0 Big 12) heads to Fargo, N.D., where they will take on No. 20 North Dakota State (6-3, 2-2). The Cyclones Big 12 opener is set for Wednesday, Jan. 9 at 7 p.m. at the Scheels Center. The dual will be streamed live on FloWrestling. -All-time against the Bison, Iowa State holds a 4-1 advantage over NDSU, including a 21-20 victory over them last year on Criteria. It was the largest comeback in school history as Iowa State amassed a 17-point comeback after trailing 20-3 in the contest.
-ISU entered the NWCA/USA Today National Coaches' Poll at No. 23 for the first time since Nov. 1, 2016. This week the Cyclones are ranked No. 23 as well.
-Individually, Iowa State has six wrestlers ranked across the board. Austin Gomez (9, 9, 9), Ian Parker (14, 18, 12), Jarrett Degen (11, 11, 8), Marcus Coleman (NR, NR, 24), Sam Colbray (19, 17, 16) and Willie Miklus (4, 6, 4) all stand in the national InterMat, FloWrestling and Trackwrestling rankings.
-Scoring points has been a point of emphasis for the Cyclones in 2018-19. In dual action, the Cyclones have six wrestlers who are averaging eight or more points per dual match.
-Austin Gomez and Jarrett Degen have been trailblazers for Iowa State's offensive output. Degen leads the team in takedowns with 14, averaging just under five per dual contest. Gomez leads the team in four-point nearfalls with three on the season. Both are a perfect 3-0 on the year in dual contests.
-ISU is fresh off of a third-place finish at the 2019 Southern Scuffle where Iowa State had eight medalists, including a runner-up performance from Austin Gomez.
-This was the first time that Iowa State had finished in the top-4 at a national tournament since the 2014 Cliff Keen Las Vegas invitational.
-Kevin Dresser improved is all-time dual wins to 170 against Ohio. He currently ranks as the No. 17 winningest active coach in Division I wrestling.
