AMES, Iowa – Iowa State (1-3) fell 2-1 to Purdue (4-0) on Sunday in the Cyclones' home-opener. Iowa State took a 1-0 lead into the halftime intermission, thanks to a beautiful 15th-minute goal by senior Hannah Cade, but the potent Boilermaker attack responded in the second stanza.
Key Moments
With the Cyclones holding a 1-0 lead after an excellent first half performance, Purdue came out firing on all cylinders, looking for any opportunity to break through the ISU defense. That chance finally came in the 59th minute, when Sarah Griffith placed her free kick beautifully into the middle of the box. The ball found teammate Leanna Rebimbas, who was able to slide her shot past ISU goalkeeper Dayja Schwichtenberg to tie the match.
Purdue would score the game-winner 10 minutes later on a goal by Griffith (69'), and the Cyclones were unable to find an equalizer.
Cyclone Game Ball Goes to...
Hannah Cade. The senior notched her first goal of the season on a highlight-reel goal in the 15th minute that brought the ISU faithful to its feet. Cade received a pass from forward Kenady Adams, took a touch to her right and fired a strike into the upper left corner of the goal, leaving Purdue keeper Marisa Bova helpless to make a save.
Much of the Cyclone offense ran through Cade, with the native of Lakeville, Minn., taking a team-high four shots, including three on-target.
Coach Speak
"I thought we really executed in the first half," head coach Tony Minatta said. "We were strong defensively. That's a team that has eight goals coming into this game, and they hadn't been scored on yet. To get the goal and to have the shutout at halftime was great. All we had to do was come out and match that intensity in the second half and bring that level of play. We need to look at what combinations we can use in the second half, especially with a one goal lead. You can't allow a team like that to run at your back line the way we did and expect the back line to keep holding them."
