AMES, Iowa – In the first official Big 12 match of the year at the Cyclone Soccer Complex, Iowa State scored a goal in the 28th minute to defeat Kansas 1-0.
The Cyclones improved to 4-6 overall and 1-1 in Big 12 play with the victory, while Kansas dropped to 5-8-1 overall and 0-4 in league play with their fifth-straight loss. Iowa State returns to action on Friday, traveling to Texas for a match with the Longhorns. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. and will be available on Longhorn Network.
"It was a great performance," Iowa State Head Coach Matt Fannon said. "We defended incredibly well, and we were really good on the ball on both sides. We were the better team today and we had a lot of different players play really well today."
In the 28th minute, Meghan Carl found Lauren McConnell in the box. With a flick of the heel, McConnell dished a pass to Mira Emma for the game-winning goal. It was the second goal of the season for Emma and the seventh of her career. It was also her third career game-winning goal. The assist was the second of the season for McConnell and the first for Carl.
Emma led the Cyclones with three shots, while Kenady Adams had a season-high two shots. Adams and Morina Suter-Doerig each had a shot on goal, while Emma had a pair. Jordan Silkowitz earned the victory in the net, as she improved to 3-5 with the win. Silkowitz recorded four saves, as she pitched her sixth career shutout. Claudia Najera appeared in her 40th career match for the Cyclones.
Iowa State had a 7-6 advantage in shots, while each team had four shots on goal. Iowa State improved to 7-1-1 under Fannon when scoring first in a match.
