BOCA RATON, Fla. – Sophomore Alesia Ranches came through with a walk-off, 2-RBI double to lift Iowa State (9-1) past Ole Miss (4-5), 7-6, on Sunday at FAU Softball Stadium. Ranches' game-winning hit completed a come-from-behind thriller for the Cyclones, who trailed the Rebels 5-0 after 3.5 innings.
With the win, the Cyclones finished 4-1 at the FAU Strikeout Cancer Tournament, including 3-0 vs. SEC opponents. Head coach Jamie Pinkerton's squad is now 9-1, tied for the best 10-game start in program history.
Iowa State 7, Ole Miss 6
The Rebels jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the second inning. Paige Smith knocked a RBI single into left field, scoring pinch runner Katelin Cooper from second base. The lead was extended in the ensuing inning. Blaise Biringer tallied a lead-off single to open the third. Jessica Puk then came to the plate and hit a two-run home run to left center, giving Ole Miss a 3-0 lead.
Sophomore pitcher Ellie Spelhaug entered in relief of starter Shannon Mortimer following Puk's home run. The Rebels scored twice more in the top of the fourth, including an infield single that extended the lead to 5-0. Karlie Charles would enter with two outs in the fourth and pitch the final 3.1 innings for Iowa State.
Senior shortstop Sami Williams hit her fourth home run of the season to lead-off the bottom of the fourth inning to get the Cyclones on the board. Mikayla Ramos and Alesia Ranches both drew walks to put two on with one out. Freshman Milaysia Ochoa then stepped into the batter's box and crushed a three-run home run right field, giving the Cyclones life. It was the first home run of Ochoa's Cyclone career, and cut the Ole Miss lead to 5-4 after four.
Mikayla Ramos tied the game at 5-5 in the fifth with a RBI double that plated Carli Spelhaug. A Biringer RBI single down the left field line in the top of the sixth gave the Rebels a one-run advantage once gain.
The Cyclones were down to their final strike before taking their first lead of the day. Carli Spelhaug singled to left to start the seventh inning rally, followed by the second intentional walk of the day for Sami Williams. Freshman Abby Gunter was then hit by pitch to load the bases with two outs. Ranches then came through in the clutch. With a full count, the native of Ewa Beach, Hawaii, hit a two-RBI double to left center, scoring Williams and pinch runner Alyssa Orr to propel Iowa State past Ole Miss.
Charles surrendered just one run on three hits with a strikeout to improve to 3-0 on the season.
On Deck
Iowa State will be back in action next weekend at the GCU Purple Classic in Phoenix, Ariz. The Cyclones open the tournament on Friday at noon CT vs. Portland State.
