AUSTIN, Texas – Iowa State (19-15, 0-2 Big 12) fell, 11-10, in a back-and-forth, eight-inning contest to No. 21 Texas (28-10-1, 5-0 Big 12) Saturday afternoon at McCombs Field. It was the second consecutive walk-off loss for the Cyclones in a tightly contested conference series.
Carli Spelhaug, Skyler Ramos and Alesia Ranches all hit a home run as part of multi-hit, multi-RBI efforts. Spelhaug finished a triple shy of the cycle in her 3-of-4 performance at the plate and swiped one bag to move into a tie for sixth all time in Iowa State history with 37 career stolen bases.
In total, nine Cyclones registered a hit in the game.
Saya Swain struck out three in her 2.1 inning start but it was Ellie Spelhaug (5-11) that wore the loss in the circle for Iowa State.
Texas jumped on top quickly with two runs in the opening frame before Iowa State cut the deficit in half in the third inning with a pair of two-out hits, capped by an RBI single from Angelina Allen. The Longhorns would respond, however, with two runs in the bottom of the third to extend their lead to 4-1.
Iowa State did more two-out damage in the fourth inning, crossing four runs to take a 5-4 lead. Sarah Tyree blooped an RBI single to center before Ramos and Carli Spelhaug homered in back-to-back at-bats to put the Cyclones in front for the first time.
The Longhorns promptly tied the game in the bottom half of the fourth and threatened for more, but a timely strikeout from Ellie Spelhaug stranded a pair of Texas baserunners in scoring position. The home side eventually retook the lead on a wild pitch in the fifth inning.
Iowa State responded with three runs in the top of the sixth, highlighted by a perfectly executed squeeze from Kasey Simpson, but Texas once again had the answer in the bottom of the frame with three runs to take a 9-8 lead into the seventh.
Ranches put the Cyclones back on top, 10-9, with a two-run homer in the seventh but Texas would tie it in the bottom of the inning to send it to extras.
The Cyclones were unable to cross a run in the top of the eighth before a double from Bella Dayton drove in the winning run for Texas.
