AMES, Iowa – Iowa State (27-26, 6-12 Big 12) split a doubleheader with Kansas (16-33, 3-15 Big 12) on the final day of the regular season. The Cyclones fell, 3-2, in game one but won the rubber match, 5-3, to clinch their second consecutive series victory on senior day.
Angelina Allen highlighted the day at the plate by hitting 5-for-7 across both games. Karlie Charles pitched 6.0 innings, three in each game, and allowed no runs on one hit.
Game One – Iowa State 2, Kansas 3
Iowa State's four-game winning streak came to an end in the front end of the doubleheader as the Cyclones fell, 3-2, to the Jayhawks.
ISU scattered three hits in the game, two of which came off the bat of Allen. Ellie Spelhaug (10-17) wore the loss in the circle for Iowa State. Charles kept the Cyclones in it by tossing three scoreless innings of relief in which she allowed only one hit.
It was a quiet start to the game as both sides had only four hits combined through the first four innings, but Kansas got on the board first in the fifth frame on a three-run home run that just snuck over the fence in right-center field.
Iowa State placed a pair of base runners on with no outs in the sixth but were only able to scrape across a run with the threat after Natalie Wellet was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded.
The Cyclones would rally in the bottom of the seventh, pulling withing one on a sac fly from Mikayla Ramos, but would ultimately fall short, 3-2.
Game Two – Iowa State 5, Kansas 3
Iowa State bounced back in the series rubber match to win, 5-3, in the senior day game.
Allen continued her hot-hitting day with a 3-of-3 performance at the dish and a pair of runs while Milaysia Ochoa turned in a two-RBI outing.
Saya Swain (8-4) earned the start and the win in the circle for the Cyclones with three strikeouts in four innings. Charles was perfect in a three-inning relief outing, finishing with three strikeouts to notch her second save of the year.
The Cyclones were first on the board with two runs on three hits in the opening frame. An Allen double to left-center field and a Jayhawk error allowed Kaylee Pond to score from first. Alesia Ranches then singled to plate Allen.
Kansas was able to step in front briefly with three runs in the top off the third on a Cyclone throwing error and a two-run homer. Ochoa would have the answer in the bottom half of the inning with a two RBI single up the middle to put ISU back on top, 4-3.
Iowa State added some insurance in the sixth inning when Wellet singled down the first-base line to score Kasey Simpson from first. Kansas was unable to rally in the seventh as Charles struck out the side to clinch the series victory.
