AMES, Iowa – No. 8 Iowa State (3-1, 0-0 Big 12) dropped a hard-fought battle to No. 4 Iowa (3-0, 0-0 Big Ten), 18-14, Sunday afternoon in front of a sold-out Hilton Coliseum. It marked Iowa State's first wrestling sell out since 1982.
It was a landmark day for college wrestling as the dual was the first to be broadcast on ESPN's flagship station, and both squads delivered an entertaining Iowa Corn Cy-Hawk Series matchup.
Evan Frost, Casey Swiderski and David Carr highlighted the effort for Iowa State with wins against top-10 opponents. Carr and Yonger Bastida each delivered bonus-point performances for the Cyclones.
No. 19 Frost brought Hilton to its feet in an 8-1 victory over No. 8 Brody Teske at 133 pounds. With the match tied 1-1 in the third period, Frost got in on a leg for a takedown and put on a tough ride. The Louisiana native used a tilt with 30 seconds left to ice the match.
Swiderski took care of business against No. 9 Victor Voinovich III at 149 pounds. Swiderski used a pair of first-period takedowns to win, 6-3.
Iowa State won the takedown battle, 15-11, but ultimately went 1-4 in matches decided by a takedown or less. Tight, would-be match-winning takedown decisions went against the Cyclones at 141 and 157 pounds.
Anthony Echemendia nearly secured three points on the edge of the mat in the third period against No. 1 Real Woods, but no takedown call was given and the match went to overtime. Woods secured a takedown in 27 seconds in the extra period to win the 141-pound matchup.
At 157 pounds, No. 18 Cody Chittum nearly had a takedown as time expired in the third period to defeat No. 2 Jared Franek, but the call on the mat stood as no takedown after an official review. Franek held on to win, 4-2, giving Iowa a 9-6 advantage at the intermission.
Out of the break, No. 2 David Carr was dominant in a 16-4 major decision over No. 5 Michael Caliendo. Carr used a four-takedown performance to secure his 97th career win.
Iowa would win the next three matches at 174, 184 and 197 to clinch the dual. At 174 pounds, MJ Gaitan's comeback effort came up just short, 14-13, to No. 14 Patrick Kennedy. Despite three third-period takedowns, Gaitan couldn't climb out of an early hole against the veteran Hawkeye.
Bastida closed the dual with a 17-6 major decision over Bradley Hill with five takedowns in the match.
