FRESNO, Calif. -- Â The Iowa State softball team (6-4) picked up two wins on Sunday after defeating the Seattle Redhawks 6-0 and the Idaho State Bengals 7-4.
In game one, ISU used a five-run first inning to separate itself from the Redhawks for good. During the first inning, three freshmen combined to drive in five of Iowa State's six runs.Â
Ashley Minor hit a three-run home run to give ISU a 3-0 lead. Two batters later, Tiana Poole hit a solo homerun to extend Iowa State's lead to 4-0. Finally, Tatum Johnson recorded her first RBI of the 2023 season to give the Cyclones a 5-0 lead.
It is the second time this season that Minor and Poole have hit home runs in the same game.
Tatum Johnson and Jaiden Ralston combined to hold Seattle to only three hits in 23 at-bats.
In game two, Janessa Jasso made her 2023 debut in the circle. Jasso held Idaho State scoreless until the Bengals scored three runs in the third inning to take a 3-0 lead.
Iowa State would score its first runs of the game in the fourth inning after Kasey Simpson singled to left field to score two runs and make it 3-2.Â
In the sixth inning, the Cyclones erupted for five runs. With the bases loaded, Sophie Maras hit a sacrifice fly to tie the game. A few batters later, Angelina Allen delivered with a go-ahead single that scored two runners. Allen and Mikayla Ramos would later score due to a throwing error by the Bengals to give ISU a 7-3 lead.
Idaho State added a run in the sixth inning but it wasn't enough.

How It Happened (Game 1 vs. Seattle)
Tatum Johnson made the start for the Cyclones.
Johnson retired the side in order in the top of the first inning.
Iowa State jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the first inning.
Sophie Maras reached base because of a Redhawk error to begin the first frame for the Cyclones.
Mikayla Ramos reached because of a fielder's choice.
Maras was forced out at second base.
Angelina Allen doubled with one out.
Ramos advanced to third base.
Ashley Minor hit her second career home run to give Iowa State a 3-0 lead.
Tiana Poole followed Minor's lead and hit her second career home run to extend ISU's lead 4-0.
Alesia Ranches singled.
Tatum Johnson singled to center to drive in a run. ISU led 5-0 after Johnson's at-bat.
Johnson recorded two quick outs before surrendering a walk to give Seattle its first base-runner of the day.
The next batter grounded out to end the inning.
The Cyclones added another run in the second inning to go up 6-0.
Kasey Simpson led off with a double.
Simpson then advanced to third on a ground out.
Mikayla Ramos recorded the 136th RBI of her career with a sacrifice fly to score Simpson.
Johnson recorded her third-straight scoreless inning in the third.
Iowa State put two runners on base in the sixth inning but failed to plate a run.
Jaiden Ralston came in to pitch for Tatum Johnson with two outs and two on in the top of the fourth inning.
Johnson's final line: 3.2 IP / 1 H / 3 BB / 0 K
Ralston forced a fly out to end the inning.
ISU was held scoreless over the final three innings.
Ralston stymied the Redhawks offense over 3.1 innings of relief work.
The freshman recorded three strikeouts over three innings.
How It Happened (Game 2 vs. Idaho State)
Iowa State went down in order in the top of the first inning.
Janessa Jasso made her first start of the 2023 season.
Jasso recorded a strikeout, fly out and a pop out in the first frame.
Tiana Poole recorded the first hit for the Cyclones in the second inning.
Poole singled to second base.
Iowa State put together a couple hits in the second inning but couldn't plate a run.
Idaho State scored three runs in the second inning.
The Cyclones put a runner on base with one out in the third inning but failed to advance the runner.
The Cyclones trimmed the Bengal lead to one after scoring two in the top of the fourth inning.
Malaysia Ochoa singled to lead off the fourth inning.
Tiana Poole singled to center field.
Ochoa advanced to second base.
Alesia Ranches forced a walk to load the bases with no outs.Â
Kasey Simpson tallied two RBis with her bases-loaded single to make it 3-2 Idaho State.
Ochoa and Poole scored on the hit by Simpson.
Jasso retired the Bengals in order in the fourth inning.
Jasso recorded a strikeout and two groundouts to keep the Bengal lead at one.
Iowa State had a runner aboard in the fifth but failed to advance them.
Ellie Spelhaug replaced Jasso in the bottom of the fifth inning.
After back-to-back runners reached base for the Bengals, Spelhaug closed the door on any possibility of the Bengals adding more runs. Idaho State led 3-2 heading into the top of the sixth inning.
After a leadoff ground out, Iowa State erupted for five runs.
Alesia Ranches singled.
Carli Spelhaug singled.
Ranches advanced to second base.
Kasey Simpson walked to load the bases.
Sophie Maras hit a sacrifice fly to left field to tie the game 3-3.

Mikayla Ramos walked to load the bases again for ISU.
Angelina Allen hit a 2-RBI single to give ISU a 5-3 lead.
Spelhaug and Simpson scored.
Ramos and Allen scored due to a Bengal throwing error to give ISU a 7-3 lead.
Idaho State scored one run in the bottom of the sixth inning.
Neither team scored in the seventh inning.

Iowa State will have four days to gear up for next week's Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic tournament in Cathedral City, Calif. ISU is slated to play five games over the course of three days. The Cyclones are set to face UC-Riverside, Cal Poly - San Luis Obispo, San Diego, Utah and Oregon next weekend.
