HONOLULU, Hawaii – Iowa State (9-12) picked up two wins on the first day of the Rainbow Wahine Classic. The Cyclones tossed a combined no-hitter in a 3-0 victory over Fordham (4-11) before defeating Niagara (2-12), 9-1, in five innings in game two.
Saya Swain and Jaiden Ralston combined for the no-hitter in game one. Swain tossed 4.2 hitless while Ralston closed it out with a 2.1-inning effort, picking up her first-career save in the process.
Mikayla Ramos registered five RBIs on the day, increasing her career total to 143 to move into third place on ISU's career RBI list. Carli Spelhaug scored four runs across the two games.
Game One – Iowa State 3, Fordham 0
Swain and Ralston's no-hitter highlighted the win for the Cyclones. The pair combined for eight strikeouts, registering five and three, respectively.
Ramos provided the spark offensively with RBIs in the first and third innings on a sac-fly and RBI single. Sarah Tyree delivered a pinch hit, RBI double in the fifth to round out the scoring for Iowa State.
Spelhaug scored all three runs of the game for the Cyclones.
Swain (2-4) was the pitcher of record for Iowa State while Emilee Watkins (0-3) suffered the loss for Fordham.
Game Two – Iowa State 9, Niagara 1 (5 Inn.)
Iowa State started fast against Niagara with a four-run first inning. Ramos blasted a solo home run to left center while Paige Nakashima sent a three-run shot over the center field wall.
Ramos was busy again in the next inning, scoring Spelhaug with a single to center, putting the Cyclones in front, 5-0, after two frames.
In the third, a wild pitch scored Milaysia Ochoa before an RBI single from Angelita Fuentes made it 7-0 in favor of the Cyclones.
Niagara would cross a run in the top of the fifth, but Iowa State would manage two more in the bottom half to complete the run rule victory. Lea Nelson was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded while Ramos drew a bases loaded walk.
Ralston (1-2) earned the win in the circle after tossing three innings in which she allowed only one hit and struck out five. Ellie Spelhaug pitched two innings and struck out three batters.
Riley Crum (0-4) wore the loss for Niagara.
