HONOLULU, Hawaii – The Iowa State softball team split a pair of games Saturday against Niagara and Hawaii at the OUTRIGGER Rainbow Wahine Classic.
The Cyclones (10-13) beat Niagara, 6-4, before falling to the host Hawaii, 5-2, in the nightcap.
Game One – Iowa State 6, Niagara 4
Carli Spelhaug blasted a pair of home runs for her first career multi-homer game and Iowa State rallied from behind to beat Niagara, 6-4, in the first game of the day for the Cyclones.
The Cyclones were hitless through four innings and trailed 2-0 before striking in the top of the fifth. ISU scored five runs with two-outs on the board.
Olivia Wardlow hit an infield single, her first hit of the season, and came around to score on a two-out triple by Alesia Ranches. Ranches scored on the play after a Niagara error. Spelhaug then belted her second home run of the season to put the Cyclones in front, 3-2.
Mikayla Ramos came around to score on an error and Angelina Allen also came home on a double steal as ISU led 5-2 heading to the bottom of the fifth.
Spelhaug added insurance in the top of the seventh with her second homer of the day and third of the season as the Cyclones went up 6-2.
Niagara would add a pair of runs in the seventh and put the tying run in scoring position, but Ellie Spelhaug came in and picked up her first save of the season.
The Cyclones stole a season-high four bases in the game, including two by Allen.
Jaiden Ralston (2-2) earned the win in relief, tossing 2.1 innings.
Game Two – Hawaii 5, Iowa State 2
Iowa State dropped the second game of the day, 5-2, to Hawaii despite a 2-for-3 performance at the plate from Milaysia Ochoa.
Hawaii jumped out to a 4-0 lead after three innings before Sarah Tyree struck in the fourth with a two-run triple. It was the first triple of Tyree's career.
Hawaii would tack on another run in the bottom of the sixth to bring the final score to 5-2.
Starting pitcher Jaiden Ralston (2-3) took the loss for the Cyclones, allowing three earned runs in 1.1 innings in the circle.
