HONOLULU, Hawaii – Iowa State (11-13) defeated Hawaii (16-9) in extra innings, 5-4, Sunday evening to close out the OUTRIGGER Rainbow Wahine Classic. Mikayla Ramos delivered a two-out, RBI single up the middle to drive home the winning run in the ninth inning.
Freshman Jaiden Ralston (2-4) earned the win in the circle for Iowa State, tossing both extra frames and striking out two of the six batters she faced. Saya Swain struck out 11 batters in a five-inning effort.
Ramos and Carli Spelhaug each had multi-hit performances in the game with three and two knocks, respectively. It was Spelhaug's two-run homer, her third long ball of the weekend, which gave Iowa State a 2-1 lead in the third inning.
A Ramos RBI double in the fourth, followed by a Milaysia Ochoa home run in the fifth, gave the Cyclones a 4-1 advantage.
Hawaii would knot the game at 4-4 in the bottom of the sixth with a three-run blast to right center field, however.
The international tie-breaker rule was in effect, which means each team started with a runner on second base in extra innings. Iowa State was the first team to take advantage with Ramos' game-winning single in the ninth.
Brianna Lopez (8-4) wore the loss for Hawaii in the circle.
