LUBBOCK, Texas – After a comeback victory last night, the Iowa State Cyclones (12-18, 1-4 Big 12) fell in game two of its three-game set with the Texas Tech Red Raiders (27-12, 1-4 Big 12) on Saturday 8-4.
ISU jumped out to an early 3-0 lead after a half inning, but the Red Raiders answered with four in the bottom of the first and never trailed in the contest again. Â
How it Happened
Back-to-back singles from Mikayla Ramos and Angelina Allen got the Cyclone offense started in this game and put runners on first and second with two outs. An RBI single by Kasey Simpson and a two-RBI single from Carli Spelhaug gave the Cyclones a 3-0 lead before the Red Raiders had a chance to hit.
The Red Raiders answered in the bottom of the first with four runs of their own to take the lead right back. Riley Love punctuated the four-run inning with a bases-clearing single. The Red Raiders would tack on two more in the second to push their lead to three after two.
The score would stay 6-3 until the fifth inning when Milaysia Ochoa smacked an opposite field home run to left field to trim the Texas Tech lead to two. The home run was Ochoa's fourth of the season, which is tied for the team lead.
The Red Raiders would add on two more runs in the bottom of the fifth to get to the final score of 8-4.
After pitching 4.2 innings of shutout softball in last night's contest, Ellie Spelhaug (1-5) started in game two and tossed 1.1 innings, while allowing six earned runs on four hits. Senior Karlie Charles pitched well in her 4.2 innings of relief, allowing two runs and striking out three.
Sophomore pitcher Sage Hoover (14-0) pitched five innings of solid softball for Texas Tech. She allowed four runs on five hits and struck out eight Cyclone hitters.
