AMES, Iowa – Iowa State head coach Jamie Pinkerton earned his 500th and 501st career wins as a head coach on Saturday after defeating the Colorado State Rams (23-17) 8-0 and 6-2 in a doubleheader. Â
Coach Pinkerton also recorded his 150th and 151st victory as head coach of the Iowa State Cyclones.  Â
How it HappenedÂ
Game 1 – Iowa State 8, Colorado State 0Â
A balance of strong pitching, solid defense and strong hitting would propel the Cyclones to their 17th victory in game one. Â
Things got started with a bang, thanks to Mikayla Ramos and Carli Spelhaug. Ramos picked up RBI no. 151 on a single to right field that scored Milaysia Ochoa and Carli Spelhaug mashed a three-run homer to left field to plate four first-inning runs. Spelhaug's homer was her fifth of the season. Â
Kasey Simpson continued to see the ball well in this contest, swatting a two-RBI single to center field in the third inning to make the score 6-0. The senior infielder is now up to nine RBI on the season. Â
The scoreboard would remain the same until the sixth inning when Alesia Ranches stepped up to the plate and launched a long homer over the left-center field wall. The homer marked her first of the season and 11th as Cyclone. Â
The Cyclones would end up walking off the Rams in the bottom of the sixth on an errant throw to secure Jamie Pinkerton's 500th win as a head coach and 150th at Iowa State. Â
The combination of Karlie Charles and Saya Swain (5-8) showed a lot of resilience in this contest, working out of a few jams in the fourth, fifth and sixth inning. The two pitchers would combine to shut out the Rams, while also striking out five batters. Â
Sydney Hornbuckle (6-5) was saddled with the loss for Colorado State. Â
Game 2 – Iowa State 6, Colorado State 2Â
Game two was a back-and-forth affair, but some late-inning fireworks by Sarah Tyree and Carli Spelhaug would be enough to secure a doubleheader sweep for the Cyclones on Saturday Â
The game's first run would come in the second inning thanks to Sarah Tyree's RBI single. Tyree had a huge day at the plate today, picking up four hits across the two games. Â
The Rams would see their first run of the day cross the plate in the third inning after Molly Gates stroked an RBI double to right-center field. The Rams would plate their second and last run of the game in the fourth inning on a Hailey Smith homer, her 11th of the season. Â
But the Cyclones would answer Colorado State's run in the third inning with two of their own in the bottom of the third. A fielder's choice off the bat of Kasey Simpson and an errant throw would be responsible for those two runs. Â
The scoreboard would remain 3-2 in Game Two until the sixth inning when Sarah Tyree blasted her second home run in as many days to left field to extend the lead to two runs. Two batters later, Carli Spelhaug would hit her second homer of the day and sixth of the season to left field to get to the game's final score of 6-2. Â
The trio of Ellie Spelhaug, Tatum Johnson (2-3) and Saya Swain (2) would take the circle in this contest. Tatum earned her second career win while Saya Swain picked up her second career save after tossing 2.1 scoreless innings in relief. Â
Giselle Bentley (2-1) earned her first loss of the season after allowing six earned runs on nine hits. Â
