IOWA CITY, Iowa – Iowa State earned its fourth-straight Cy-Hawk victory over the Iowa Hawkeyes Wednesday evening, 7-4, capping off the 2022-23 Iowa Corn Cy-Hawk Series. The Cyclones tied the school's largest margin of victory ever in the series, winning 17-8.
Iowa State (19-27) stayed undefeated against the Hawkeyes under head coach Jamie Pinkerton. Iowa (28-21) dropped its fourth straight game in its penultimate non-conference game.
Milaysia Ochoa had a whale of a game, going 2-2 at the plate, blasting a pair of homers, recording four RBI and accounting for three of Iowa State's seven runs. Angelina Allen and Alesia Ranches also had multi-hit games for the Cyclones, with Allen earning the only other extra-base hit.
Freshman pitcher Jaiden Ralston picked up her fifth win of the season for the Cyclones, allowing just three hits in 3.2 innings of work. Ralston relieved Tatum Johnson and punched out four Hawkeyes before Saya Swain came in to close it down. Swain pitched three innings and struck out five Hawkeyes, earning her third save of the season.
How it Happened
The Hawkeyes got on the board first, hanging two runs on the Cyclones in the bottom of the first inning. ISU starting pitcher Tatum Johnson walked the bases loaded and Iowa was able to convert, knocking two runners in before fellow freshman pitcher Jaiden Ralston pushed Iowa State through the inning.
After a scoreless second inning, the Cyclones put a three-spot on the scoreboard in the top of the third. Alesia Ranches led the inning off with a single through the left side which was followed by a Natalie Wellet full-count walk. Milaysia Ochoa stepped up to the plate and belted her tenth home run of the season, crushing a ball over the left field wall to give the Cyclones a 3-2 lead.
After a beautiful Tiana Poole-Kasey Simpson-Natalie Wellet relay in the bottom of the third to get a runner at home to keep Iowa at two runs, Milaysia Ochoa blasted a leadoff solo shot in the fifth to push Iowa State's lead to 4-2. Ochoa's homer pushed her to 11 on the season and gave her her third multi-homer performance of the season.
Iowa State tallied its second three-run inning of the night in the sixth, pushing its lead to 7-2. Simpson got the inning started with a single and was pushed to second thanks to a Sarah Tyree sacrifice bunt. Wellet followed it up with a single while Ochoa drew a walk to load the bases with one out. Mikayla Ramos entered the batter's box and knocked a single into left field to score two, extending the Cyclone lead. Angelina Allen matched Ramos' single with one of her, scoring Ochoa to give Iowa State its third run of the frame.
The Hawkeyes notched a third run in the bottom of the sixth, converting on a Saya Swain wild pitch to make the score 7-3 headed into the final inning.
Iowa threatened to rally in the bottom of the seventh, plating a run and bringing the tying run to the plate (with two runners on). However, Saya Swain got the last two Hawkeyes to strikeout and Iowa State left Iowa City with its 19th win of the season.
Tonight's contest was the Hawkeyes' highest attended game of the season.
