Cyclones Drop Game One of Three-Game Set

AMES, Iowa – The Iowa State Cyclones (12-20, 1-6 Big 12) dropped the opening contest of its weekend series with the No. 9 Texas Longhorns (31-8-1, 4-3) on Thursday, 8-0 in five innings.

The Longhorns capitalized on five Cyclone errors on their way to a five-inning victory over Iowa State.

How it Happened

Saya Swain was able to work out of a bases-loaded jam in the opening frame by inducing an inning-ending double play. She would go on to strike out two in the next frame to hold the Longhorns scoreless through two.

In the bottom of the second inning, Tiana Poole missed a homerun by a matter of inches to dead-center field but would settle for a double. She would be left stranded on second base after Texas starting pitcher Mac Morgan retired the next three in order.

The Longhorns would plate six runs in the top of the third inning on five hits and four Cyclone errors. The biggest blow of the inning came off the bat of Viviana Martinez, who hit a two-run homer to give the Longhorns a 3-0 lead.

Cyclone catcher Mikayla Ramos picked up a fourth-inning single to extend her hitting streak to four. Ramos and Poole tallied the only two hits for the Cyclones in today's contest.

Saya Swain (4-7) was the pitcher of record for Iowa State in this one. She lasted 2.2 innings and gave up six runs (two earned ) and struck out four Longhorn batters.

Sophomore Mac Morgan (11-2) notched her 11th win and went the distance for Texas.
