AMES, Iowa – The Iowa State Cyclones (12-22, 1-8 Big 12) fell in the series finale with the No. 9 Texas Longhorns (33-8-1, 6-3 Big 12) on Saturday, 9-1.
How it Happened
The Cyclones were able to tally six hits in the ballgame, the most of any game this series, but couldn't plate the runs when they needed to. They would finish just 1 of 4 with runners in scoring position, compared to a 6 of 14 showing by Texas.
Three of the six Cyclone hits came in the fourth inning when Kasey Simpson, Carli Spelhaug and Tatum Johnson collected back-to-back-to-back singles to plate the lone run of the contest for ISU.
Carli Spelhaug shined in this contest for Iowa State. She picked up two hits in this one, including a second inning double off Longhorn starting pitcher Citlaly Gutierrez. The double was her 10th extra-base hit of the season.
Texas was able to plate seven runs in the first two innings, taking control early on its way to victory in Saturday's game. The biggest blow came off the bat of Reese Atwood, who hit a towering three-run homer in the first inning to put Texas ahead, as it never looked back.
The Longhorns would add four runs in the second, a run in the fifth and another in the seventh to reach their final score of nine.
Jaiden Ralston (3-5) got the ball first for Iowa State in this contest. She allowed seven runs (five earned runs) over 1.2 innings.
Ellie Spelhaug pitched 5.1 innings of solid relief in this game and was able to limit a lot of damage from the explosive Longhorn lineup. She allowed only two runs on seven hits and struck out three batters.
Freshman starting pitcher Citlaly Gutierrez (11-2) pitched six innings of one-run softball before giving way to Sophia Simpson in the seventh who struck out four batters in her lone inning of work.
