Iowa State Runners' Sights Set on NCAA Midwest Regional

Iowa State cross country begins its journey to the 2024 NCAA Championships with the NCAA Midwest Regional meet on Friday morning. The Cyclone men enter as the second-ranked team in the region while the women enter ranked fourth. The top two teams at the Midwest Regional will earn automatic bids to the national championship.

Last Time Out
The No. 4 Iowa State men ran to a podium team finish at the Big 12 Championships, finishing third behind second-ranked BYU and top-ranked Oklahoma State in the 8K race. The Cyclone men had four runners earn All-Big 12 honors in Robin Kwemoi Bera (4th), Said Mechaal (10th), Joash Ruto (13th) and Sanele Masondo (14th). Director of Track & Field and Cross Country Jeremy Sudbury was very pleased with his team's performance and excited to see the group's jump in distance with 10K championships races.

The Cyclone women finished seventh as a team, led by Maelle Porcher's ninth-place individual finish. Porcher earned All-Big 12 honors for the second straight year. Her time of 19:58.2 was just eight seconds from making the top five at the conference championships.

What to Watch For

The Iowa State men will battle with No. 2 Oklahoma State for automatic team bids. The Cyclones finished just 10 team points behind the Cowboys in the 8K race at the Big 12 Championships.
Robin Kwemoi Bera has led Iowa State in each of its last three competitions, finishing fifth at both the Nuttycombe Invitational and the Wisconsin Pre-National meet before claiming fourth place at the conference championships.
Maelle Porcher has been a steady presence atop the Cyclone women's lineup since she made her Iowa State debut last August, claiming top 25 finishes this season at Nuttycombe and Pre-Nationals on the Zimmer Championship Cross Country Course.
Porcher earned her second all-conference honors of her Iowa State career two weeks ago at the Big 12 Championships, finishing ninth in 19:58.2.

Pending qualification from Friday's meet, Iowa State will chase an NCAA Championship next Saturday, November 23 in Madison. It would mark the third time this season the Cyclones run at Wisconsin's Zimmer Championship Cross Country Course.
