AMES, Iowa – Iowa State cemented six event wins, while Thai Thompson took down the heptathlon school record to close the ISU Holiday Invite.
Thompson took down Taylor Sanderson's 2016 record of 5,619 with a total of 5,649, notching three all time or indoor bests and two event wins through the seven events. Thompson got the win with a new all-time best of 15-1 (4.60m) in the pole vault, taking down his previous PR of 14-9, and ended with the 1,000m victory of 2:40.06.
Freshman Chase Lathrop totaled 5,030 in his heptathlon debut, now the ninth-highest score in program history.
ISU swept the women's and men's 1,000m as freshman Becca Heitzig clocked 2:49.48 and Tyler Carreon hit a PR of 2:23.87. The women finished first through fourth in the event.
Iowa State also swept the women's and men's 600m, beginning with Camryn Hubbard (1:32.89) and Kaia Holtkamp (1:35.16) going one-two. On the men's side Darius Kipyego opened his season with a new best of 1:16.52, followed by a trio of new Cyclones. Dugion Blackman (1:16.55) had a photo finish with Kipyego, and Aman Thornton (1:16.98) and freshman Jacoby Harmon (1:18.47) provided for first through fourth finishes for ISU.
Sophomore Grayson Hartman opened his season with the 60m hurdles win with an all-time best of 8.07. Hartman also posted the fastest time in prelims with 8.17.
In the mile, Emanuel Galdino nearly came under four minutes with 4:01.96, an almost four second personal best. Cyclone All-American alum Festus Lagat took the win with a sub-four time of 3:59.33.
The Cyclones will next return to action Friday, Jan. 17 to host the Bill Bergan Invite.
