LONG BEACH, Calif. – Iowa State (2-4) opened up the Wilson Invitational with a convincing 5-1 win over Oregon State (3-4) on Friday evening, limiting the Beavers to just one run on five hits.
After a scoreless first two frames, ISU broke the stalemate in the third, going up 2-0. The Cyclones would tack on two more in the fifth before adding one final run in the seventh. Oregon State recorded its lone run in the bottom of the seventh, as its rally fell short.
The top six of the Cyclone starting lineup all recorded a hit on the evening, with freshman Jessie Clemons leading the way with a pair. Sophomore Isabelle Nosan had a game-high two RBI, while senior Angelina Allen had a game-best two runs scored.
In the circle, Lauren Schurman started the contest before giving way to Jaiden Ralston (1-2). Schurman hurled the first three frames, allowing a pair of hits and striking out one. Ralston was brought in for relief in the fourth, where she'd close out the contest, allowing one run on two hits, to earn her first win of the season. OSU's one run is the fewest allowed by ISU so far this season.
For the Beavers, leftfielder Morgan Howey led the team with a pair of knocks. Three other Beavs collected hits, while Nicole Donahue had the team's lone RBI as she drew a game-best two walks on the evening. Ellie Garcia (1-1) suffered her first loss of the season, allowing four runs (two earned) in her five innings of action.
How it Happened
The Cyclones struck first for the sixth consecutive game on Friday, breaking a 0-0 stalemate in the third inning. Freshman Hayleigh Oliver led off the frame with a walk and would eventually make it to third off an Allen double. With two in scoring position, Bartholomew sent a sac fly to center, scoring Oliver and putting ISU up. Next up, Clemons singled through the left side to plate Allen and make it 2-0 for ISU.
Iowa State tacked on two more in the fifth, as the inning began with Trice reaching on an error. A Bartholomew walk and Clemons single would load the bases for ISU with Sydney Malott taking the box. She drew the team's second walk of the inning, scoring Trice, and making it 3-0 in favor of the Cyclones. With one out, Nosan stepped into the box and lined out to left field, bringing in a second run and making it 4-0.
The Cyclone duo of Schurman and Ralston kept OSU off the board as the teams went to the seventh. With runners on second and third, Nosan would send a seventh-inning double down the left line to score one last insurance run and put the Cyclones up by five.
In the bottom of the frame, Oregon State would avoid the shutout, scoring off an RBI double to make it 5-1, before eventually striking out swinging to end the game.
